Undeva pe la jumătatea drumului dintre Vâlcea și Pitești, retrasă și ascunsă intre dealuri, se află Biserica mănăstirii Cotmeana, aparent unul din cele mai vechi așezăminte monahale din Țara Românească. Ridicată din zid de însuși Mircea cel Bătrân, pe locul unei biserici din lemn mai vechi. Frescele interioare în culori vii și ancadramentele sculptate în piatră sunt însă din epoca lui Brâncoveanu, adică din perioada de maximă înflorire a artei medievale în Țara Românească.

Biserica fortificată din Valea Viilor, monument listat ca patrimoniu UNESCO.
Aceste biserici fortificate cu zidurile lor masive, fortificațiile și turnurile lor de apărare construite de comunitățile sătești de sași sunt extraordinare. Prin ele, sașii nu doar că au supraviețuit atacurilor și invaziilor, dar ne-au transmis mărturia geniului lor constructiv, a meșteșugului lor și a culturii lor excepționale.

The Fortified Church of Valea Viilor, a UNESCO world heritage site.
These Saxon Fortified Churches with their massive walls and fortifications built by the village communities are amazing. With them, the Saxons not only survived the turbulent history, but at the same time left us the testimony of their exceptional building skills and culture.

Bethlen Castle in the village of Criș near Sighișoara, the main residence of the powerful Bethlen family. A hidden gem. In recent years it has recovered from ruins to a new life (still a work in progress). The loggia is a wonderful example of the Transylvanian Renaissance.

On ❤️ the fabulous high altitude road that crosses the Carpathian Mountains reaching 2,145 m (over 7,000 ft) at the highest point...We got into trouble with some donkeys 😅

Update 28 aug. Și a treia bornă, aflată la intrarea în satul Criș, în apropierea castelului Bethlen 🙂

I was amazed by Saint Margaret Evangelical Church in the medieval Citadel of Mediaș. It's my subjective opinion, but this is the most beautiful Saxon Lutheran church I know in Transylvania. Mediaș Citadel is a Sleeping Beauty, but it is worth visiting if even for this church only. It's a hidden gem.

When in Bucharest, consider visiting the historical spaces of the former Royal Palace! They are composed by the Throne Hall, the Royal Dining Room and the Voievods' Stairs, and totally worth it.

HISTORIC PAVEMENT
The wood block pavement at the entrance to Filantropia Jewish Cemetery in Bucharest is a remaining of the existing street pavement before the foundation of the cemetery, in 1865!
In the past, the main streets of the city were paved with wooden blocks from tree trunks, or with thick oak beams - that's why they were also called bridges, such as Mogoșoaiei Bridge.
Wood block was favored, as stone was scarce and wood was abundant.

Another Bucharest treasure we can now admire - originally the headquarters of the biggest bank in Romania, the Marmorosch-Blank Bank - emblematic of the Neo-Romanian architectural style, masterpiece of architect Petre Antonescu from the 1920s. The building was restored and reopened as a hotel last summer, but for me today it was the first time I had the joy to enter inside.
