We’ve had an idea! Over the next four weeks, we thought we’d share with you guys some facts about Romania that may be lesser-known by most. It’s a chance to offer a glimpse into the lore that surrounds our country and gives an impression of how we have become the nation we are today. We’ll be sharing three facts towards the end of every week, so why not get involved and let us know if there’s anything you’ve heard before, or if there are factoids you’d also like to share! Here goes..

Our first fact relates to the legend of Bucharest, our capital city, and how it derived its name! According to local lore, Bucharest owes its name to a lovestruck shepherd named Bucur, who fell for a young woman named Dâmboviţa—sharing her name with the river still winding through the heart of the city today. Perhaps the romance of this tale is part of the reason why Bucharest is often called the "Little Paris"! What do you guys think?

The second fact we wish to share today relates to one particularly record-breaking church made of wood! In the enchanting region of Maramureș, the Sapanta Peri Monastery proudly stands as the tallest wooden church in the world—and the second-tallest wooden structure in Europe. At 257 feet, its spire is topped by a 23-foot cross weighing an impressive 1,000 pounds—enough to make even giants take a second look, surely?!

Finally, our third fact really does go to show what an intelligent bunch we Romanians can be… Romania has earned its spot in the global Hall of Fame with four Nobel Prize winners: George Emil Palade (Medicine), Elie Wiesel (Peace), Herta Müller (Literature), and Stefan Hell (Chemistry). From science to stories, we’ve had our fair share of attempts at changing the world for the better!

Check back next week for three more facts. Consider following our page so that you don’t miss it.

Unirii Square brings together a nice mix of green spaces and shopping options in Bucharest, You’ll find cool fountains in the square too, which are a must-see in the summer months, as well as the likes of the Romanian Patriarchal Cathedral and the Palace of the Parliament.

Right next door is Unirea Shopping Center, packed with shops ranging from big-name brands to local gems. It’s a great spot to relax and get some shopping in. The area is wheelchair-friendly, but heads up—it’s not ideal for visitors with visual impairments, so plan accordingly!

When I sat down at my desk this morning, I sighed and thought, "How do I possibly fit everything I want to say about today into just one post?"

Today, as you may already know, is International Day of Persons with Disabilities—a day for reflection, celebration, and amplifying voices within the disability community. You’ll see brands and individuals sharing posts about what this day means to them, and I think that’s wonderful. But as I started to write, I quickly realized that what I wanted to say couldn’t be contained in a single post—or even a single article. So instead, I let my thoughts flow, capturing just the beginnings of a conversation I hope to expand on in the future.

This year’s theme—“Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future”—reminds us of the incredible power of leadership within our community. In my post, I touch on the progress we’ve made, the challenges that remain, and the importance of recognizing the leaders driving change.

I also celebrate some truly inspiring individuals, like Cristina Căluianu, Josh Grisdale, Anette Parviste, and Sharol Avento Signorelli, alongside the incredible Sinead Burke and the late, great, powerful Judy Heumann. Judy, in particular, deserves the gratitude of not just the disabled community in the USA but around the world for her lifelong fight for disability rights.

This day is about so much more than recognition—it’s about fostering (and continuing) meaningful conversations about accessibility, inclusion, and leadership. Let’s celebrate today, yes—but let’s carry that energy forward through all 364 days to come.

Wishing you all a reflective, empowering, and joyful International Day of Persons with Disabilities. 💙

- Anthony

Have you heard about the stunning Rasnov Fortress perched atop a commanding hill? Originally built as a final refuge against invaders, this historic site once safeguarded the residents of the township of Rasnov.

Getting to the fortress is an adventure in itself. You can ascend the stairs for a rewarding climb or take the wheelchair-accessible funicular, which offers breathtaking views of Rasnov below and the distant, dramatic mountains.

Located just a short drive from Brasov, Rasnov is a highlight on many of our tours and day trips. Interested in exploring ancient architecture and experiencing a place steeped in history? Make Rasnov Fortress a must-visit stop on your Romanian journey!

The Accessible Romania logo and website, "www.accessibleromania.com," appear on the design, along with the tagline "accessible Romania by Sano Touring" at the bottom.]

We’re inspired by the powerful words of the late Stella Young, which perfectly capture the heart of what we believe:

Disability isn’t caused by medical conditions alone—it’s shaped by the barriers in our environment. This perspective, rooted in the social model of disability, reminds us that changing the world around us can make a profound difference in the lives of people with disabilities (PWDs).

Accessibility benefits everyone. Simple improvements, like wider doorways or step-free paths, don’t inconvenience others—they enhance daily life for all. Who’s ever complained about a door that’s easier to walk through? Small changes can have a huge impact, breaking down barriers and fostering inclusivity.

At Accessible Romania, we take these values to heart. Our tours are designed to remove obstacles at every turn, creating welcoming experiences that redefine what’s possible for travelers with disabilities.

[Image Description: Stella Young, is seated in a wheelchair wearing a bright yellow and brown patterned top. She has short blonde hair and is smiling slightly. Behind her, there is an out-of-focus urban background with glass windows. A quote attributed to her reads, “My disability exists not because I use a wheelchair, but because the broader environment isn’t accessible.” The quote is styled in bold text on a cream background, framed by green geometric cut-out shapes around the image.]
