Interreg Romania-Bulgaria Programme Romania-Bulgaria Programme is an Interreg EU-financed Programme. www.interregrobg.eu
www.interregviarobg.eu

The Programme supports the development of the eligible border areas, in Romania and Bulgaria (Mehedinti, Dolj, Olt, Teleorman, Giurgiu, Calarasi and Constanta in Romania, Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Veliko-Tarnovo, Ruse, Silistra and Dobrich in Bulgaria). The Programme aims to create a “bridge” between the two countries, in order to help the border areas overcome their similar development prob

lems. People in border areas are encouraged to cooperate, to exchange information and benefit from improved access over the frontier. They work together on issues like improving accessibility, flood prevention, risk management, preservation of natural assets and tourism promotion. www.interregrobg.eu

🌱 BUFFER+ – BUFFER carbon + water in peatlands: landscape-based solutions for climate adaptation

Funded under the INTERREG VI-B West Europe Programme 2021-2027, the BUFFER+ project is a collaborative effort involving 21 partners and 7 associated organizations across North West Europe (NWE). The initiative focuses on revitalizing peatlands to enhance their role as natural carbon and water buffers, fostering climate resilience and biodiversity.

Project Highlights:
🌳 Restoring Peatland Functions to transform degraded areas into effective CO2 and water storage sites, contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation.
💧 Water Management by harnessing the natural capabilities of wet, healthy peatlands to manage water during periods of excess rainfall and drought.
🦋 Boosting Biodiversity by rehabilitating ecosystems and creating conditions for the return of native species.
💰 Sustainable Revenue Streams through innovative economic models like wetland farming and payments for ecosystem services, stimulating the local economy.
🔧 Testing New Solutions such as peat-free substrates, natural water replenishment, and the formation of new peat, complemented by biomolecular trials and biodiversity measurements.
👥 Inclusive Governance by involving industry stakeholders, researchers, local authorities, and the public in co-creating and applying new climate-adaptive strategies.

The BUFFER+ project not only restores the natural buffering capacity of peatlands but also empowers communities with sustainable solutions, turning climate challenges into economic and ecological opportunities.

Great news! 🎉

THE SECOND STRATEGIC PROJECT FINANCED BY INTERREG VI-A ROMANIA-BULGARIA PROGRAMME WAS SIGNED TODAY!

We are very excited to announce that today, December 05, 2024, the financing contract for the strategic project Streamlining cross-border cooperation: Joint approach in disaster resilience (STREAM 2) was signed. The project is funded under the Interreg VI-A Romania-Bulgaria Programme.

With an implementation period of 48 months and a total budget of €24,330,679.26, of which €19,464,543.40 is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), this project represents an important step in strengthening safety and disaster response capacity in the Romania-Bulgaria cross-border area.

The project partners include the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations of Romania, acting as the project leader, along with the "DOBROGEA" Emergency Situations Inspectorate of Constanța County, the Giurgiu Border Police Territorial Inspectorate, and Bulgarian partners: the Directorate General for Fire Safety and Civil Protection, the Academy of the Ministry of Interior, and the National Association of Volunteers in the Republic of Bulgaria.

The main objective of the project is to enhance the safety and protection of the population in the Programme area by improving and strengthening adaptation capacity to climate change and resilience to disaster risk prevention. This will be achieved through the establishment of cross-border disaster response and situational operations centers, capacity-building activities, and joint interventions by institutions responsible for emergency management.
