💐Welcome spring! In 🇷🇴 Romania on March 1 we celebrate the Mărțișor tradition.

🎁On this day, Romanians exchange small gifts and charms with red and white strings attached to them, as a symbol of the victory of spring over winter. The charms are considered to bring good luck and joy, while the strings are tied around the hand and worn until the end of March, when they are taken off and bound to a blooming branch.

❄️ Snow may already be melting in Bucharest, but it's still winter with plenty of snow just a 1-2 hours train ride away.

The sights in all 3 spots are absolutely breathtaking in winter and they also feature some incredible historical sights: 🏰the Peleș and Cantacuzino Castles or the Gothic style⛪Black Church.

Train rides start at Gara de Nord train station in and usually run every hour. On most days, due to heavy traffic, the train is the fastest way to reach these wonderful locations.

In December 1989, Romanians took to the streets in the major cities to protest against the Communist regime and ultimately overthrow it.

🇷🇴 One of the big symbols of those days was the Romanian flag with a hole in the middle.

❓Many of our guests ask us why this was so.

➡️ The answer is that during the Communist period, even though Romanian used essentially the same flag with the 3 colors - blue, yellow & red -, in the middle there was also the emblem of the Socialist Republic of Romania, visible in the 2nd picture.

🚩 By cutting out this symbol, the people were reasserting their freedom and cutting ties with the symbols imposed on them until that point.
