Hello, everyone!

This has been a tough year for all of us and we should give ourselves a hi5 and a hug for making it through to this point.

We miss guiding and taking people on tours and showing them the beauty and peculiarities of Romania. Better days will come!

Roaring Romania remains closed to tours until March 2021. On March 14th it will be the 7 year anniversary of Roaring Romania and we plan the reopening for then.

This doesn’t mean we go into hibernation. On the contrary! We will continue to share photos, travel ideas and stories about Bucharest and Romania. Thank you for keeping virtually close and please take care of your health! Hope to see you soon! - Alexandra Chirila

When the guide can’t go to Peles Castle, Peles Castle comes to the guide.

Starting 12:00 today Romania is in total lock-down, which means that people need to stay inside unless they go grocery shopping, to the pharmacy, doctor or solitary physical activity like walking their dog. People over 65 are not allowed to go outside with many NGOs and volunteers ready to step in with grocery shopping and other errands. A strict measure but necessary to keep in check the spread of Coronavirus and not overwhelm the Romanian medical system.

Thank you to the doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers, first responders, policemen, delivery workers, scientists and volunteers who keep the world moving while we keep to our houses. You are the heroes of our days!

'Here's to roaring women: may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them!'
Happy International Women's Day!

Story of these photos:

The photo was taken by Alexandra Chirila on a tour in July 2019. The group was going over the Prislop Pass from Maramures to Bucovina. The first villages to welcome you in Bucovina have these amazing, embellished houses and I always stop with my group for photos. This time around while we were looking at the pretty houses, trying to decide which one we liked best, the lady of the house stopped her bike next to us and invited us in to better look at her beautiful house. She was so proud of it!
My group noticed that her hands were dark blue and were very curious about it. 'I just came from the forest, I went to pick blueberries to make some jam. Just wait a second!' She rushed in the house and came out with a small bucket of blueberries and fed us until our hands and lips were as blue as hers. Needless to say, it was the favorite moment of the group out of a 10 day vacation through Romania.

Spring, be welcome! The day of the Mărțișor is finally here!

Mărțișor is an old tradition celebrated all over Romania every year, on March 1st. The name Mărțișor could be considered diminutive of March (Martie in Romanian) and it's part of the string of pre- Christian celebrations to welcome spring - the season of rebirth.

And seapking of string, it is believed that the person who wears a red and white string enjoys a prosperous and healthy year.

For good luck and good weather, you need to wear the string from March 1st until the first trees bloom. When the first trees are in bloom, you must knot the Mărțișor to the tree branches. En voila! An exquisite year awaits!

It is the year 2020 and you have decided to visit Transylvania for your vacation. Good choice, dear reader, good choice.

Transylvania is a collection of unspoiled forests, Gothic castles, fortified churches going back to the 1300s, misty mornings and a multitude of traditions. It is overall a surprising place to visit and still fairly off the beaten path on the European tourism map.

If you want to go the extra mile and make your visit in Transylvania special, I’ve put together a list of activities to include in your trip.

February 24th - a day for love and beginnings! In Romanian folklore, today we celebrate the Dragobete.

This pre-Christian celebration is the Romanian version of the Valentine's Day and comes together with a fun set of traditions. In the morning, girls and boys go into the forests to pick flowers. Girls would collect the last snow they could find, called 'faerie snow', melt it and use it in beauty treatments throughout the year. And then, at noon 'the chase' would begin where girls ran towards the village and boys chased them. If a girl fancied a boy, she would let herself get caught and kissed to mark their engagement.

And that is not all! This is the day when birds mate, symbolizing the beginning of spring so hunting is prohibited. If you wish to have a particular good year, make sure you schedule some house cleaning. Men are not allowed to upset women for otherwise the year to come won't be easy on them. Oh! and make sure you get yourself kissed today!

A day dedicated to bears 🐻🐻

Spot the beehive! If you walk around Timisoara, look around at the decorations on the houses around you. You’ll notice a lot of beehives. The explanation is quite simple: Timisoara used to be a city of bankers (still is?!?) and the beehive was the symbol for banks. Cool isn’t?

Basilica Maria Radna in the small town of Lipova, Arad County. A former Franciscan Monastery, Maria Radna is a spectacular place to visit. The basilica is impressive on the outside - the towers go up 67 meters and grand on the inside with frescoes and a Carrara marble altar. Starting 2003, Maria Radna no longer operates as a monastery - after 7 centuries of Franciscan presence in the area, the monastery is closed due to the lack of Franciscan brothers in the monastery. Now it is a museum opened for visitors (and of course the basilica is open for service). 10/10 we recommend a visit

Today is Appreciate a Dragon Day and we want to celebrate the majestic Balaur - the fearsome Romanian dragon.
The Balaur is a feral hydra breed that is probably the result of a hydra mating with a dragon. They are much more powerful than normal hydra's. When you cut off a head of this creature two more powerful heads grow back instead, but they are extremely fragile to fire attacks.

Today we're celebrating and our museum of choice is the Muzeul Național al Hărților și Cărții Vechi or The National Museum of Maps and Old Books in Bucharest. The collection boasts maps that go back to the 16th century and you get a magnifying glass to play Sherlock while exploring the way the world looked like in centuries past.

The is a way to bring attention to and celebrate museums by combining the ancient history of the world with the funny modern trend that is taking selfies. So share your own museum selfies with us and the world!

Our Story

Roaring Romania Private Tours is winner of Tripadvisor Excellence Certificate for 2017 and 2019 with 95,5% approval rate based on traveler reviews from 22 countries of the world. We organize private tours ranging from city walking tours and day trips to roundtrips that take you to far corners of Romania.

Rewind to somewhere in 2013 when I, Alexandra Chirila, now tourguide and business owner was working a corporate job. It was a good, stable job but it wasn’t what I pictured myself doing for my entire life. I wanted to build a business based on what I loved doing: travel, history, cultural curiosities and myths. Plus, I wanted to work more with people than computers.

What possible, viable business could come out of this?

During the quest to find my Eureka moment, one night, I had a dream: I was driving the scenic mountain road Transfagarasan with a group of friends and I was their tour guide. And that was it, friends! I woke up the next morning and decided I was going to become a tourguide and build a travel business.
