The Memorial of Rebirth, inaugurated in 2005, honors the victims of the 1989 Romanian Revolution that overthrew communism.

Designed by Alexandru Ghilduş, the 25-meter white marble pillar, topped with a metal "crown," stands in Revolution Square, where Nicolae Ceauşescu was overthrown. The monument features an entangled sphere pierced by the pillar.

This premium tour is a first-hand experience of Bucharest’s recent history and culture, that was deeply influenced by the Communist Era.

Explore the main communism-related landmarks of the city and enjoy a visit at the Museum of Communism in Bucharest, led by an expert English or Spanish-speaking local guide. Skip-the-line entry and admission at the museum included.

The tour dives into the complex history of communism in Bucharest and will provide you with a deep understanding of the communist ideology, from the international context that led to its implementation, to the dawns of the Revolution of 1989.

Each stop reveals hidden details you might miss on your own and personal stories about day-to-day life under the communist regime.

Landmarks include the Palace of Parliament, as well as churches that were forcibly relocated to make space for Ceausescu’s new urban plans, and the Revolution Square, where Nicolae Ceausescu held his last public speech before *spoiler alert* being publicly killed along with his wife, Elena.

The museum visit includes a communist snack and a cup of the so-called “nechezol”, a coffee substitute popularly drank during the 80s, when Romanians endured dramatic food scarcity. All snacks / beverages are served in vintage communist tableware. Also, the museum allows visitors directly immerse themselves into history by interacting with exhibits.

Ceausescu’s rule had a profound effect on Bucharest, especially his grandiose vision to demolish entire neighborhoods, making way for his dream of a new communist city.

This included the colossal Palace of Parliament, a symbol of his megalomania and the second-largest administrative building in the world.

During our tour, you’ll visit poignant sites such as Revolution Square, where the seeds of revolution were sown, and see churches that were forcibly relocated to make space for Ceausescu’s urban redesign. We’ll explore Izvor Park, once the site of demolished homes, and discover relics of buildings altered or destroyed during this tumultuous era.

An unbelievable story :)

It all started on a Sunday, at a family lunch, when, after a good meal and a glass of wine, our parents accidentally, but call it fate, told us stories from old #Bucharest, about their daily lives, cultural events and urban myths. We suddently realized that we know almost nothing about our city so we took the decision to find out more. As any lazy “student”, we thought that it’s easier to learn it from others, than to search it for ourselves, so we started taking part in different tours, some general, other temathic. Another stroke of fate, because passion was born. After every tour, we were spending time discussing about what we found out, double checking the information, finding even more interesting information about architectural or historical sites. Until one day when accidentally, but call it fate, one guide asked us if we are there to spy for our own private tours. An idea was born, yes we want our own private tours, but different, tours based on stories, personal memmories and feelings. From one blog to another, from one documentary to another, from one old newspaper to another, from our parents’ and grandparents’ stories, from our childhood during communism and from our numerous strolls along the streets of Bucharest, we managed to create unique tours, to include hidden interesting sites known only by us, to see beyond the beaten touristic paths. #Unbelievable, right? But call it fate.
