Did you know that "Obeliscul Carolina" (1831) in "Piata Muzeului" features Cluj's coat of arms from the 14th century? Cluj was granted the prestigious title of a "free royal city" in 1405 by Sigismund of Luxembourg.

A portrait of Romanian philosopher, poet, playwright and novelist Lucian Blaga (1895 - 1961) was yesterday donated to Cluj's Central University Library . Blaga posed for painter Radu Maier for the duration of 22 sessions.

Bugs Bunny!!

Did you know that famous pianist and composer Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886) gave a performance in Cluj, in what is currently known as The Transylvanian Museum of Ethnography? He is the source for the infamous "Lisztomania", a phenomenon describing the intense hysteria some audiences experienced at his concerts... The epitome of cool Bugs Bunny executed his own marvelous rendition of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2:

Born in Cluj, Carol Szathmari (1812 – 1887) is considered the world’s first war photographer! He first took his camera to the Crimea War’s battlefield in 1854. His work was sought after by Queen Victoria, Napoleon III, Franz Josef I. His house of birth is located on Iuliu Maniu “mirror” Street.

The former “Poalei Tzedek” synagogue is used since 1997 as a platform for cultural, artistic and social programs run by the Tranzit House Foundation. The original building was partly restored and it currently functions as a great space for contemporary art and various exhibitions.

After a plague pandemic, the Statue of St. Mary was raised in 1744, as a sign of gratefulness for the protection of the community. It is very similar to the so-called ”Pestsäulen” (plague columns), mainly to be found in the South of Germany.

Finally! The Tower of the St. Michael Church in Unirii Square is open for visitors - people have the chance to enjoy the fascinating panorama from above. Free entrance between 11.00 - 15.00, but only until Sunday. Not to be missed! :-)

Curioşii pot să vadă gratis, zilnic, până duminică inclusiv, între orele 11.00-15.00, cm arată oraşul de sus, din turnul Bisericii „Sf. Mihail". Parohia romano-catolică intenţionează să introducă turnul bisericii în circuitul turistic.

Have you ever noticed the splendid 'mirror street' in Cluj which connects the Avram Iancu and Unirii squares?

The most beloved "mirror" street in Cluj, whose buildings' facades echo each other, makes the transition from the Avram Iancu Square to Unirii Square, where the Gothic-style built "Saint Michael" Roman-Catholic Church lies. Its Neo-Gothic tower, raised during the 19th century, is visible in the picture.

One of the oldest streets in the city, in the close proximity of the medieval entrance door to the inner town (now disappeared).At present, plenty of friendly cafes welcome both locals and tourists for a relaxed time in this historically significant area.

DID YOU KNOW THAT in 1405 Cluj received the title of "free Royal city", which gave citizens the right to consolidate a defence structure against invaders or other evil-doers in the era...In time, the city ended up with a full 22-tower structure. Many of these towers, each under the care of a powerful guild, were still visible in early 19th century. Nowadays, only the Tailors' Tower is surviving in top shape. Here is a short list of towers which didn't make it until our present days:
The Bricklayers’s Tower, raised during the 16th-17th centuries, demolished in 1810
The Saddlers’ Tower, raised during the 16th- 17th centuries, demolished in 1817
The Gate Tower on “Turda’s Street”, raised during the 15th century, demolished in 1841
The Carpenters’ Tower, raised during the 16th – 17th century, demolished in 1880
The Coblers’ Tower, raised during the 15th century, demolished in 1831
The Gate Tower on “Manastur’s Street”, raised in 1476, demolished in 1843
The Blacksmiths’ Tower, raised during the 15th century, demolished in 1796
The Goldsmiths’ Tower, raised during the 15th century, demolished in 1859
The Gate Tower on “The Bridge Street”, raised in 1477, demolished in 1868
The Gate Tower on “the Hungarians’ Street”, raised during the 15th – 16th centuries, demolished in 1872
