Viscri: The Saxon Village Where Traditions Came Back to Life

With a history that goes back to the 12th century, Viscri is maybe the most famous village in Romania. Prince Charles’ visits, its fortified church, and the activity of the Mihai Eminescu Trust helped this small village reinvent itself in the past years. Its promotion was such a success that Viscri is right now one of Transylvania’s must-see attractions.

One of the most beautiful of all the Saxon villages and their fortified churches, Viscri is also impressive because it's a “survivor”. In fact, the communist regime wanted to turn the entire village to dust.

Visiting Viscri is not just about sightseeing; it’s about immersing yourself in the local way of life. The village is home to a warm and welcoming community, and interacting with the locals is an essential part of the experience.

One of the highlights of a visit is the opportunity to witness traditional crafts in action. Local artisans continue to practice age-old trades, such as blacksmithing, pottery, and weaving. Visitors can often watch these craftspeople at work and even purchase handmade souvenirs to take home as a memento of their journey.

Tuica is a traditional Romanian spirit that contains ~ 24–86% alcohol by volume (usually 40–55%), prepared only from plums.
It might be hard to believe Romanian "moonshine"—often concocted in makeshift, charcoal-stoked backyard distilleries—is in fact, the country's national drink. It's called ţuică, a clear and gut-warming potent spirit distilled from plums, one of the country's most bountiful crops.

While the legend of Dracula traipsing mountaintop stone castles still commands this country's mystic fervor, only a few visitors may know the making of ţuică in the months of waning daylight is also a long-held tradition dating to medieval times. And the locals say the best ţuică is found at roadside stands or within rustic villages, often bottled in round-faced, canteen-shaped vessels.

Romania is one of the world's largest wine producers and fifth-largest among European wine-producing countries, after Italy, France, Spain, and Germany. Similar in size to wine-producing countries such as Chile and Portugal but lesser-known on the world wine stage.

Feteasca Neagră is one of the oldest grape varieties. It was cultivated over 2,000 years ago by the Dacians, ancestors of modern Romanians. The wines made from these grapes are known for their deep ruby color with flavors of blackberry, dark cherries, plums, and chocolate.

The monumental ensemble of Târgu-Jiu includes the monuments made by our great sculptor Constantin Brâncuşi, the father of the modern sculpture, during 1937 and 1938, namely: The Table of Silence, the Gate of the Kiss, the Alley of the Seats, and the Endless Column, along with a few smaller other works (the chairs placed on the alley of the park where the monument is and the and the benches next to the Gate of the Kiss).

The Ensemble was designed to glorify the "Memory of the heroes of Gorj, who sacrificed their life in the Reunification War" (the test is quoted according to the donation documents), who died in the battles that took place along the Jiu River during the World War One.

The message of this both sculptural and artistic Ensemble, as well as urban and architectural, cannot be fully understood without integrating into it the information related to the Romanian traditions, but also the genius of an artist who also had contact with the specifics of the art of other peoples, especially the Oriental tradition. "Art must be universal and accessible to all," Brâncuşi would say. On one occasion, the artist concluded: "In art, what matters is the joy. You do not need to understand it. Are you happy that you see it? This is enough." Brâncuşi left to his native country the synthesis of his creation as a monumental ensemble, as a tribute to the heroes fallen in the Fight that took place in the area of Jiu River during the First World War.

Peles castle was built by the first King of Romania, Carol I of Hohenzollern – Sigmaringen, between 1873 and 1914. By 1883, the year of its inauguration, it was used as summer residence.

The castle was later enlarged using in a blend of German neo-Renaissance, neo-Byzantine, and neo-rococo styles. This work went on for 25 years and ended with the outbreak of World War I.

Nearby is a second castle, called Pelisor. It was built between 1899 and 1902 as a residence for the royal heir, Prince Ferdinand, and his English wife, Princess Marie.”
While the younger castle exhibits the same German neo-Renaissance style, it is less solemn than the original, and it has a more modern style.

A project to create Europe’s largest forested national park aims to protect 100,000 hectares of wilderness as well as boost ecotourism in support of local communities

Today i am proud to be a Romanian, and I have to thank the people who wrote the article from The guardian about this project of Foundation Conservation Carphatia.
Their ambition is to create the continent's largest forested national park.
Romania has more than 6m hectares of wild forest of which a significant portion is still virgin, unfragmented areas with no human settlement, home to some of the few remaining sectors of old-growth forest in Europe.
Since its inception in 2009, the founders and a team of philanthropists have been fundraising to buy tracts of forest to stop logging, and have involved local communities, providing jobs and slowly bringing more visitors to the area. I can’t wait to sample the ecotourism offers myself, hiking to refugee and campsites to relax and watch wildlife.

I invite you to visit and explore Romania and its riches in a safe, interesting, and full potential environment.
