Aguapark Piterland-2 in St Petersburg

Piterland-2 is occupying the space of 14000 sq meters. It is half-size of its big brother Piterland. But this does not make it less attractive. The guests of Piterland-2 can experience water rides that are very different from one another. Each has different height and complexity level. Make sure to try out the “Beater” and “Serpentine Road”. If you don’t feel like the lonely rider – join the “Fatty” water ride for families. Its wide slopes are for the use by several people at once.

The most popular water amusements are extreme ones. For instance, adrenaline-addicts would appreciate the “Whirlpool” – the only one of a kind in St Petersburg. First you ride along the tunnel and then find yourself in the gigantic swirl.

There are several swimming pools in Piterland-2: sport-oriented, for climbing, and swimming pool with sea waves imitation.

Djur-Djur Waterfall in Crimea

Djur-Djur Waterfall is located in the picturesque natural amphitheater created by nature amidst the mountains. Its waters fall down as the wide ribbon from 16 meters height. Translated from the Tartar language the name of the waterfall means “the murmuring water”. Djur-Djur is really justifying its name: the water jets are not crushing down but warble like the mountain creek. Water capacity is 270 litres per second.

At the foot of the water giant there are two observation points, around the place there are plenty of small backwaters which are inhabited by river trout. There is a staircase by the faraway rifts behind the rock, by climbing it one can see the plunge tubs where water is cascading towards the waterfall. The deepest tub is the Youth tub. According to the legend, when one dips there, he gains his youth back. There are other magical tubs as well, but this magic works only once a year.

Waterfall Gremiachy in Sergiev Posad

There is a wonderful, blessed and happy place only a couple hours’ drive away from Moscow - Waterfall Gremiachy. The legend says this spring started to flow due to the prayers of St Sergius of Radonezh. There is a wooden chapel dedicated to the saint, commemorating this event. Beneath the chapel three strong water jets are flowing, streaming down along the watercourse. The waterfall is very much alike the mountain spring and is attracting pilgrims from the whole region. The earnest pilgrims are bathing in St Serguis curative well, there is a plunge tub made of logs for this reason here.

This palace was built in Alupka during the first half of the 19th century, by the foot of the Ai-Petri Mountain. The first owner of this magnificent palace was count Mikhail Vorontsov. The construction began in 1830 and took 18 years to complete. The palace was created in Neo-Gothic style, the northern façade of the central site and the western part of the palace was made in Tudor style. St Isaac’s Square

This square is considered to be one of most beautiful highlights of St Petersburg. It is flanked by the Mariinsky Palace from the south. Now it is the Legislative Assembly of St Petersburg; the Palace was built in 1840’s for Maria, the eldest daughter of Emperor Nicholas I. In front of the palace is the monument to that very Emperor on the horseback, which is considered to be unique in engineering, for it has only 3 points of support. From the other side the square is graced by the majestic classical St Isaacs Cathedral – the main cathedral of the Romanovs. This is one of the top monuments in St Petersburg, both the Russian Orthodox Church and the unique assembly of classical works of art. There are two historical famous elegant hotels overlooking the square: Astoria and Angleterre. All other buildings overlooking the St Isaacs Square were aristocratic palaces and administrative buildings in the 19th century. There is the pretty lilac garden in the middle of the square.

Nevsky Prospect

Nevsky Prospect is definitely the most important and one of the oldest avenues in St Petersburg. There are guidebooks which are dedicated entirely to Nevsky Prospect, where each house can boast of its unique story. The avenue is described many times in Russian classical books, and its architecture was not affected by the modern changes. This is certainly the first place to go for the independent traveler, since Nevsky Prospect is the road passing by all most important city highlights.

The most interesting part for the tourists lies between the Admiralty building and Vosstania Square. The central subway station of the city, which is also named “Nevsky Prospect”, is also situated here.

The most outstanding buildings and architectural ensembles here are as follows: The Palace Square, Stroganov Palace, Kazan Cathedral, Singer Building, Gostiny Dvor Department store, Yeliseev Store, Alexandrinsky Drama Theater, Anichkov Bridge.

Oranienbaum

Oranienbaum town, which is named Lomonosov today, after the famous Russian 18th century scientist, is the only surviving genuine 1700’s residence among the suburbs of St Petersburg. It is not as exuberant as Peterhof, not military-style like Kronshtadt, not as famous as Tzarskoye Selo. But unlike any of the other suburban royal residences of St Petersburg it was not devastated during the WWII. Oranienbaum is the only environ of Leningrad which was not occupied by the N***s. So its pavilions, palaces, parks, ponds and statues are original 18th century works.

Oranuenbaum Highlights

Grand Menshikov Palace is the fine northern baroque style specimen dating back to the era of Peter I. In front of the northern façade of the palace there is the Lower garden, which is one of the first regular style gardens in Russia. Its main alley is visually continuing the palace central staircase.

To the south-west from the palace there is Upper Garden, where several interesting highlights are located. The Stone Pavilion is the most outstanding. It is the former music room, now hosting the collection of historical garden and interior sculpture. Yelisey and Vassilissa the Cats on Malaya Sadovaya Street

Yelisey the cat and Vassilissa the lady-cat are two small sculptures placed in the center of St Petersburg on Malaya Sadovaya Street. They have settled here not so long ago, in 2000. Elisey the cat has impressive appearance of the true gentleman, while Vassilissa the lady cat has bent her right paw and lifted her chin up, flirtatiously looking down at the passers-by.

There are several stories behind these monuments. The most popular explanation is linked to the WWII history. During the Siege of Leningrad no cats survived in the city and it was attacked by rats. Nothing of the chemicals helped and it was decided to deliver 2 carriages full of cats into the besieged Leningrad. The furry “soldiers” released the city from rodents.

Elisey was the first sculpture to be installed here, it happened on January 25th 2000. This date in Russian tradition is also considered to be the students’ holiday. Elisey is stationed on the house # 8 Malaya Sadovaya, and the statue of Vasilissa is on the opposite house # 3. She was installed to keep company for Elisey on April 1st 2000.

Chizhik Pyzhik statue on the Fontanka river

The monument Chizhik Pyzhik was installed on November 19th in 1994. It is located on the Fontanka river, by the 1st Engineering bridge, nearby Mikhailovsky (Engineeer’s) Castle and across the house # 12/1 along the Fontanka Embankment. Chizhik Pyzhik is the smallest monument in St Petersburg. Its height is 11 cm and weight is 5 kg.

The story behind Chizhik Pyzhik statue

In 1835 His Highness Prince Georgiy of Oldenburg, the nephew of Emperor Nickolas I, opened the Imperial School of Justice Studies. It was located in the house # 6 along the Fontanka river embankment. The students of that school were nicknamed as “chizhik pyzhik’s”. “Chizhik” stands for the “siskin” in Russian, “pyzhik” stands for the fur of a young reindeer. The students’ uniform coats had green color, buttonholes and sleeve cuffs had yellow color, like the siskin’s feathers – here comes the “chizhik” part. They also wore uniform hats made of young reindeer’s skin, which gave them the second part of a nickname “pyzhik”. There is another explanation of “pyzhik” – in Russian language it also stands for “the pompous person”.

In 1994 there was “Humour and Satire Festival” held in St Petersburg. One of the participants, the writer Andrey Bitov, suggested making the sculpture of that folkloric “student-siskin”. The idea was full heartedly supported and brought to realization.

Vyborg, Leningrad region

Vyborg is the most European-style city in Russia. It was founded by Swedish crusaders more than 7 centuries ago and still keeps the traces of Scandinavian culture expressed in the local architecture. An incredible combination of styles and architectural appearances gives the city a bright medieval flavor complemented by authentic restaurants, entourage culture expressed in theme exhibitions and festivals.
Sightseeing In Vyborg:
Vyborg castle is the main attraction and symbol of the city that in past times used to be an outpost, an administrative center and a barrack. Now the castle hosts an Ethnography museum. Here, also, the "Swedish prison" exhibition reminds about the period when this place was used to keep prisoners, and demonstrates the "Finnish" and "Russian" eras of Vyborg of the former times. In some halls you can also learn something interesting about the wild nature of the picturesque Karelian region.
You will definitely get impressed by the Old Town Hall, the gothic style Church of St. Hyacinth, and the oldest stone building in the city - the house of the Merchant Guild built in honour of the Holy spirit.

Monplaisir Palace in Peterhof

A walk through Monplaisir is a true royal pleasure. The soft whisper of the waves of the Gulf of Finland, fairy rustle of the emerald foliage of Peterhof Park and the elegance of Monplaisir Palace building can compete with any Loire castle featuring great elegance and originality. The name of the palace dating back to the early 18th century reflects its atmosphere - in French “mon Plaisir” means "My Pleasure" - this was the idea that Peter the Great was keeping in mind when decided to arise this cosy paradise on the shore. And it is no coincidence that Monplaisir used to be called the" heart " of Peterhof, as it was the favorite Palace of the Tsar-Reformer.

Stalin skyscraper

When in 1947 Moscow celebrated its 800th anniversary it was decided to build eight skyscrapers honoring this event and representing the power of the Soviet Union. The constructions became known as “STALINKAs” in honor of the person who had submitted the proposal for the construction - Stalin.
All Stalin's skyscrapers in Moscow were symbolically founded in the same day. It is believed that the architects aimed to create unique structures outperforming the majesty of the Manhattan skyscraper. So, on the contrary to flat-design buildings they created original stepped towers adorned with spires. However, one of the buildings were not destined to be completed, so there are only seven buildings nowadays.
It was supposed that Stalin's skyscrapers would embody the city of the future dominating the main landscape highlights of the city. Today, the skyscrapers prove to be very popular tourist attractions housing the following institutions:
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation
- Lomonosov Moscow State University
- Aviators’ House
- Hotel “Ukraine”
- Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building
- Hotel " Leningradskaya»
- High-rise building on the Red Gate Square on the Garden ring
