Among many splendid and gorgeous Romanovs' residences, one stands out of a line. It is Gatchina that looks more like a European medieval fortress and does not resemble the other royal Russian residences.

Gatchina is located south of St Petersburg (42 km from the city center). The place has glorious and fascinating history.
First mention about Gatchina traces back to the 15th century. At that time it was known as avillage of "Hotchino". Later on the territory was claimed back by Peter the Great from Sweden.

The first owner of this land became Peter's sister Natalia. After her death in a couple of deals it was commissioned by the crown.
In 1765 Catherine II presented the estate to one of her many favourites, Gregory Orlov, who started the construction of a hunter's palace with a regular English park nearby. The architect Antonio Rinaldi succeeded to create a palace that became an essential part of Gatchina landscape. Two wings connected by the central gallery were laid with local limestone; the whole building resembled about modest and accurate European fortress not a traditional Russian baroque or classical palace.

Gregory Orlov died in 2 years after the palace construction had been finished, and Catherine gifted the estate to her son Paul. In his time Gatchina obtained the city status and developed on. Vincenzo Brenna, the court architect of Paul I, reconstructed the main palace buildings and created the ensemble of the whole city.

During more than a decade of running tours and organising travel for international visitors in Russia, we were able to take an apolitical stance. Sadly we are to live through times when travel and politics cannot be separated.

Only a couple of weeks ago we were eagerly looking forward to " a new era of post pandemic travel", learning about new travel trends, new customers' demands and designing new products to meet those demands. Given the current geopolitical situation, we left with no option but to retreat into a standby mode once again.

Thank you each and everyone who reached out in the past couple of weeks, for your warm words of support and kindness. They meant a lot to us. Humanity is universal and knows no geographical boundaries.

We will remain loyal to a once chosen professional journey and are hoping to be able to contribute to bringing people together and building new bridges the soonest.

In our today's blog post we have summarised the current pandemic requirements for the most popular museum and concert venues in St Petersburg and Moscow.

We realise how annoying 😢 those requirements might be, but better to be equipped with knowledge (and necessary paperwork) to avoid disappointment. On the bright side, restrictions are easing, and there are no QR-codes or exemptions needed to travel into Russia.

Requirements change frequently and our friendly customer-service team is always happy to help to provide the latest update.

Stay safe and happy travels! 🌏

Pavlovsk is a small town named after Emperor Paul I.

His mother, Catherine the Great, presented him this land, which became one of the most exquisite and classy Romanovs’ residences.
