Discover Russian ballet with a local guide; see our best recommendations!
St. Petersburg, being often called the capital of Russian ballet, has hosted a great number of famous ballet dancers like Anna Pavlova, Vaslav Nijinsky, Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov and many others.
St .Petersburg ballet is recognized as one of the best in the world offering visitors a number of places to enjoy the art of ballet.
Here is my small guide to the world of St. Petersburg ballet.
Mariinsky ballet company
Probably the best place to see ballet in St. Pete is the world-famous Mariinsky theatre.
Every year they stage amazing Russian ballet performances: the Swan lake, the Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, La Bayadere, don Quixote, the Sleeping beauty, Anna Karenina etc.
The ballet performances take place inside the original historical building of Mariinsky theatre which has preserved its elegance and will impress you with golden interiors and amazing chandeliers.
Apart from this, there is Mariinsky II, an absolutely brand-new building, a piece of a modern architecture built next to the original stage. There inside you are welcome to see operas and ballets. However, I personally prefer to visit the historical stage to see the ballet.
There is also a concert hall (a part of Mariinsky theatre) where you can enjoy classical music.

Michailovsky theatre.
It is one of the oldest St. Petersburg theatres. In 2007 it was recognized as the best musical theatre of the city. Offers a number of 1-act or 2-act ballets and operas. Famous modern ballet dancers perform on the stage of Michailovsky theatre: Ivan Vasiliev and Leonid Sarafanov, Farukh Ruzimatov and others. Renowned for amazing costumes.

Eifman ballet company
If you are keen on modern art, especially modern ballet with its experimental style, Eifman Ballet Company is highly recommended. Established by Boris Eifman in 1977, it became renowned for the brilliant combination of classical music, acrobatic dance and minimalist approach to stage decoration.

The Hermitage theatre
Built on the order of Catherine the Great it became the Imperial theatre of the Romanovs.
Today stages ballets as well as concerts and other performances. It is usually busy during the high season and can be very popular among big touristic groups. And if you not a fan of them, try to visit the Hermitage theatre during the low season. Otherwise you may have a feeling that it is a very touristic theatre.
Tickets can be purchased through tour companies, tour guides, hotels etc
Alexandrinsky theatre
The Alexandrinsky theatre is the oldest national theatre of St. Petersburg. Although it is known more for its drama performances than for its ballet you still can enjoy nice ballet in the summer.
It has recently been renovated and deserves a visit also because of its interiors and architecture.
