Elephants in Akagera national park began in an unexpected way. Around 26 baby elephants from a cull in southern Rwanda were transferred to the park in 1975. They now number around 130, thanks to conservation initiatives. “Times were harsh for both humans and animals in the early to mid-1990s.

The African giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is the tallest land animal, with males reaching heights of up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) and females around 14 feet (4.3 meters). They have long necks, which help them reach high leaves in trees, primarily acacias. Interestingly, despite their long necks, giraffes have the same number of neck vertebrae as humans—seven.

Giraffes are also known for their distinctive coat patterns, which vary between subspecies, helping them camouflage in their natural habitats. They are social animals, often found in loose herds, and communicate using a variety of sounds, including grunts and hisses, though they are generally quiet creatures. Unfortunately, giraffe populations are threatened by habitat loss and poaching, leading to a decline in their numbers across Africa.
