Shoebill

The peculiar shoebill ( also known as the shoebilled stork and whalehead) is a large bird with a considerable population in Rwanda. It was once thought to be related to the storks, but the latest genetic evidence places it closer to pelican. At up to 140 cm tall, with a grey plumage and that distinctive clog-shaped bill, the shoebill is easy to identify but can be hard to find in its swampland habitat.

Rwanda is home to over 700 bird species which are scattered between protected areas, swamps, and agricultural lands. Most of the birding happens in the 3 protected areas of Akagera national park, Nyungwe national park and Volcanoes national park.

The national park derives its name from River Kagera, which flows through the park. The park is located in the North-eastern part of Rwanda, in the districts of Kayonza and Nyagatare. The southern part of Akagera national park is used as an entrance by visitors into the national park and is situated in the district of Kayonza; while the northern gate of the park is used as only as an exit out of Akagera. The northern gate of the park is situated in the district of Nyagatare.
