The Intore or ‘chosen ones’ of bygone days were elite soldiers trained to go to war for Rwanda’s king. To this day, the Intore dance remains very popular, in part due to its visual attractiveness, with dancers wearing white flowing hairpieces and brandishing traditional weapons. Consisting of three parts, performed by women, men and the drums, the dance represents togetherness and unification.

Owned and managed by Mantis (part of the Accor Group), Akagera Game Lodge is more of a hotel-style, featuring 59 well equipped rooms with some rooms boasting amazing views over Lake Ihema. There is a lovely pool and sun-loungers as well as options for eating and drinking both inside and out. There are plans underway to add a gym, an outside tented massage area and an outdoor BBQ area. The property caters well for families, offering separate dining areas to provide a good experience for both families and travellers without children alike. The lodge is a short drive to the boat launch on Lake Ihema for boating safaris.

Magashi Camp in Akagera National Park boasts six high-spec tents, which are well spaced and private, overlooking Lake Rwanyakazinga. Owned and managed by Wilderness Safaris, Magashi is situated in a private concession in the park, although guests can freely enjoy wildlife safaris in the main park as well. Guided game drives and boat cruises on the lake are included. With a big eco-focus, the camp runs entirely on solar (with a backup generator), and limits use of single-use plastics. There is a small plunge pool and sundeck, a fully stocked bar, lounge area, indoor and outdoor dining options as well as a lovely campfire area - perfect for swapping stories!
