On Friday 2nd September, AWF CEO Kaddu Kiwe Sebunya participated in Rwanda’s annual Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony, joining our longtime partner, Rwanda Development Board (RDB), to name a baby mountain gorilla born at Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. Kaddu was one of a group of 20 namers, which included His Royal Highness Prince Charles, actress Uzo Aduba, Chairman of the Rwanda Development Board Itzhak Fisher, Secretary General of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie Louise Mushikiwabo, and soccer stars Didier Drogba and Gilberto Silva, among others.
Kwita Izina highlights the importance of mountain gorillas to our national heritage as . The female baby gorilla named by Kaddu Sebunya was born on the 13th of September 2021 from the Mutobo family. The chosen name, INDATEZUKA, which means resilient, was chosen to highlight the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring successful conservation efforts. In attribution to their growing population and the nature of conservation in Africa, which are both persistently resilient, we hope that this name will be the sense of inspiration for the upcoming generation of African conservationists to remain steadfast in the pursuit for conservation success.
