Despite the area’s beauty, there were few accommodation options and activity offerings : Scenic boat trips, kayaking excursions, bike rides, and hikes are all on offer. The area is also now hosting Rwanda’s creative core outside of Kigali: An artist residence, gallery, and vegan meditation retreat overlook the volcanic shores. At 4,507m above sea level, Mt Karisimbi is the highest peak in the Virunga Mountains, and the 11th highest mountain in Africa. This two-day hike is a real adventure – trekking through tropical forest, camping on the slopes of the volcano and climbing to the summit for sunrise.
You’ll head out in the morning from your accommodation near the Volcanoes National Park to meet your guide at the park headquarters. From here it’s a drive of an hour or so to the start of the trail, at around 2,600m above sea level, where you will join your porters, and begin the trek.

The sheer majesty of the silverbacks, the playfulness of the toddlers and the tenderness of their mothers are just mesmerizing. So where are the best places to see gorillas?
Most people want to track mountain gorillas and there’s much debate as to which country offers the best mountain gorilla safari. They’re found in only three countries: Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Thankfully, their numbers are increasing – the latest census confirmed there are now over 1,000 compared to 250 when conservation efforts first started some 50 years ago.
More than 100,000 western lowland gorillas live in the lush rainforests of west and central Africa. Classed as critically endangered, fewer groups are habituated for tracking because of their inaccessible homelands.

Take breakfast and report at the Volcanes National Park head Office for registration and then drive to the base contours of Mt. Bisoke. Bisoke is one of the Virunga Volcanoes, that includes Mounts Karisimbi, Gahinga ,Sabyinyo, and Muhabura. It is rather a sheer climb, preeminent to cope during the short or long dry season. On top, the biggest crater lake of the Virunga chain can be seen unless there is too much fog. The track leads through bamboo forest, the habitat of mountain gorillas, giant lobelia or hagenia and alpine meadows. Picnic lunch at the summit, while viewing the beautiful Bisoke Crater Lake . Fantastic view. Then later you will descend and return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay at your hotel .
