Can anyone explain the link between Rugezi Marsh, these pipes, grey crowned cranes and their importance to Rwanda?

Lake + volcano + sunset = magic!
A dugout canoe bridge crossed by bicycles, pedestrians and even motorbikes at Rugezi Marsh.
Sweet potatoes are carried in huge bags by bicycles across the marsh and over the mountains into Uganda. Back-breaking work!

The guides at Rugezi, Northern Rwanda explained to us The GIRINKA program, where poor families are given a cow. This provides nutrition, a source of income for some, and even fertiliser (in the form of manure) for their crops. Brilliant!
In-line with the philosophy of: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
Other African countries can learn a lot from Rwanda...

The smiling faces of the kids at Rugezi are enough to brighten anybody's day.

If the government and private sector commitment to tourism promotion continues its positive streak, Rwanda will by the end of this year, have up to 10,000 hotel rooms, Rwanda Development Board (RDB) chief tourism officer Belise Kariza said yesterday.
The brilliantly bright colours of the water lily flower are enhanced by the dark colour of the water at Rugezi, where the peat gives the water a "tea-coloured" tint. The bee in the center of the flower seems to be loving life :)

We are all reliant on natural resources for our survival. However, much of society living in the first world is so disconnected from the source of these resources that we don't realise it.
At Rugezi, life is about subsistence; from the farming techniques to the way in which houses are built. The community at Rugezi are experts at making and building with clay bricks. It is fascinating to watch the process; from nothing but mud and water they build very beautiful, solid houses.
Volunteers at Rugezi can experience this by getting their hands dirty and learning to build with clay.
On a Penn State Altoona Enactus trip to Africa over the summer, one student was able to change the lives of four children. In turn, that impacted her own life beyond measure.

This wetland covers 6735 hectares. That is the equivalent to 13400 football fields. To give you an idea of how big this is we have projected it onto maps of London and downtown Los Angeles
30 Grey Crowned Cranes foraging at Rugezi. The International Crane Foundation is doing fantastic work in this area to ensure the survival of this species and its habitat.
Veterinarian Olivier Nsengimana is driving the rescue of the gray-crowned crane.
We had the pleasure of learning about a new project of The Hive Rwanda at Rugezi. A wonderful example of a number of sustainable practices we encountered around Rugezi Marsh. Volunteers are invited to come and work on projects like this with a friendly community at Rugezi.
