Gavutu and Tanambogo islands were the site of one of the bloodiest battles during the commencement of Guadalcanal. 516 Japanese and 70 Marines lost their lives in the two days of fighting between the 7th and 9th of August 1942.

Today the islands hold reminders of the fierce fighting; the remains of the Australian air base who occupied the island you until May 1942, a number of U caves which are the likely resting place of many Japanese, while below the surface PT boats can be viewed by scuba divers.
