The site of the first Allied counterattack in the Pacific War. The islands of Tulagi/Gavutu/Tanambogo. This colonial capital was the first territory liberated in the war and the first total ground defeat of the Japanese on 7-8 August 1942. Around 1,000 Japanese were killed and they never attempted to take it back. Located 20 miles away from Guadalcanal, this action was treated as a separate battle.
