🌊 Happy World Oceans Day 2024! 🌊
World Oceans Day, initiated at the Rio Summit in 1992, stands as a powerful reminder of the critical importance of sustainable ocean management and resource use. Every 8 June, people around the globe unite to take decisive actions towards healthier oceans. This year's theme, "Awaken New Depths," calls us to dive into innovative solutions for ocean conservation.
In island nations like Mauritius and Seychelles, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is steadfast in its commitment to fostering a sustainable Blue Economy. Notably, the UNDP collaborates with global donors, local authorities, and NGOs to protect and restore vital marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs.
The aim is to empower coastal communities to sustainably earn livelihoods from ocean-based activities while enhancing the resilience of marine ecosystems against various pressures, ensuring they continue to provide essential services for generations to come.

Small Island Developing States are among the most affected by climate change impacts, such as rising sea levels, intensification of extreme weather events and flooding.
The UNDP is working with partners and local communities to support adaptation efforts in the coastal areas of Seychelles. Ecosystem Based Adaptation (EBA) approaches are being implemented through the construction of a coastal wall, which aims at reducing the risks of climate change induced coastal flooding.

SIDS report high rates of mobilizing public finance but lag in accessing private finance, which highlights the challenges of scale that is a barrier to private investment for most SIDS.
UNDP supported #seychelles🇸🇨 to develop its SDG Investor Map, which aims to attract private capital to areas of high impact on sustainable development. The map identifies 5 priority sectors namely Renewable Resources, Services, Infrastructure, technology and communications and food and beverage.

Did you know that Small Island Developing States 🏝️ were first recognized as a special case both for their environment & development at the 1992 Earth Summit held in Brazil? This event set a new blueprint for international action on the environment & led to the creation of the Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States, which is held every 10 years:
️➡️Barbados hosted the 1st SIDS Conference in 1994, resulting in the Barbados Programme of Action, which prescribed specific actions that would enable SIDS to achieve sustainable development.
➡️The 2nd Edition was held in Mauritius in 2005. The Mauritius Strategy was adopted to complement and address remaining gaps in implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action.
➡️ In 2014, Samoa hosted the 3rd SIDS Conference, charting a fresh course for sustainable development in small islands. The SAMOA Pathway addresses the current vulnerabilities of SIDS & outlines a framework tailored specifically to their unique challenges.

Most #SIDS are Large Ocean States, with ocean territories over 20 times larger than their land area. #seychelles claims an Exclusive Economic Zone of 1.7 million square kilometres, which represent a huge potential for its blue economy sector.
UNDP’s Blue Economy investments total US$210 million, including 17 Ecosystem & Biodiversity projects in hashtag#SIDS worth $71 million.
Learn how UNDP is helping #SIDS realize the maximum potential of their blue economies through sustainable, low emission and climate resilient ocean use by 2030 👇

Despite being responsible for less than 1% of global GHG emissions, Small Island Developing States 🏝 are among the most affected by climate change impacts. Yet, many SIDS have made strong political commitments to build a climate-resilient future.
Through its updated and ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), #seychelles🇸🇨 has pledged to reduce economy-wide emissions by 26.4% by 2030 and to achieve a decarbonized net-zero emissions economy by 2050.

🏝Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are a distinct group of 39 States and 18 Associate Members of United Nations regional commissions, located in three geographical regions, namely the Caribbean, the Pacific, and the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea (AIS).
🏡 Home to approximately 65 million people, SIDS face unique social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities, which are exacerbated by climate change.
UNDP’s ‘Rising Up for SIDS’ Offer accelerates transformative development based on digital transformation, blue economy and climate action, with innovative finance as a central, cross-cutting enabler. In the past decade, UNDP and partners have invested about US$ 400 million per year in SIDS, including Mauritius & Seychelles.

Global Tourism Resilience Day [2/2]
For small island developing states like Seychelles, tourism is a major source of income, foreign currency earnings, and employment. In Seychelles, the UNDP has been working with the Government and other stakeholders to support the resilience of the Tourism Sector, which was harshly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The SDG Investor Map, which aims to attract private capital to areas of high impact on sustainable development, identifies two Investment Opportunity Areas, namely in eco-tourism development and value chains, and in cultural and creative tourism development. Investments in these areas aim at lessening the industry-induced environmental burden on the planet, encouraging the participation of local communities in tourism value generation, and safeguarding national heritage.
On today’s Global Tourism Resilience Day, explore how SDG-aligned investment in the tourism sector can increase its resilience👇
