Thames Path National Trail The Thames Path runs practically the full length of the River Thames from Source through to Sea. Through this page we aim to bring it closer to you.

The Thames is a major river flowing through southern England. While best known because its lower reaches flow through central London, the river flows through several other towns and cities, including Oxford, Reading and Windsor. The river gives its name to the Thames Valley, a region of England centred around the river between Oxford and West London, the Thames Gateway, the area centred around the

tidal Thames, and the Thames Estuary to the east of London. The River Thames is the longest river entirely in England, rising officially at Thames Head in Gloucestershire, and flowing into the North Sea at the Thames Estuary. It has a special significance in flowing through London, the capital of the United Kingdom, although London only touches a short part of its course. The river is tidal in London with a rise and fall of and becomes non-tidal at Teddington Lock. The river contains over 80 islands, and having both seawater and freshwater stretches supports a variety of wildlife.

The Environment Agency (EA) has launched a public consultation on updating the Thames Estuary 2100 Plan, established in 2012.

It is seeking views on what measures are needed to address rising sea levels, linked to increasingly volatile weather patterns, and their impact on communities and wildlife.

A throwback to when the Gรถtheborg of Sweden passed through Tower Bridge on 8 August 2022.

The Gรถtheborg of Sweden is one of the worldโ€™s largest ocean-going wooden sailing vessels. It is a replica of an 18th-century ship that sank off the coast of Sweden in 1745.

1666, the began. Two days later it reached the medieval Cathedral of Old St Paul's, as a piece of burning wood landed on the roof and the flames quickly took hold.

Writer and eye-witness John Evelyn wrote, โ€˜the stones of [St] Paules flew like grenados [grenades]โ€ฆโ€™, that the lead roof melted and flowed like a stream down Ludgate Hill, and that the pavements glowed red with the heat of the inferno.

By the night of Wednesday 5th September the wind dropped, and by Thursday 6th the fire had eased off enough that Londoners could properly see the damage. 87 churches were destroyed, along with the Royal Exchange, the Guildhall, 13,000 homes โ€“ and Old St Paulโ€™s was a ruined shell.
