Big Moose Apartment has window views in three different directions and the two views that look over the river are great for Northern lights spotting in the winter, but there are also lovely sunset views in the summer months, as tonight shows.

Seasonal confusion... With Minus 4 overnight and plenty of snow still hanging around it's sort of wintery, but with +12deg today, +20deg in the strong sun, and daylight from 2.00am your mind/body/body clock are all telling you it's summer! As a result I was wide awake and working at 3.00am today. 🤣 Things will settle down and I do love the seasons we have. Hope things are nice with you.

Some beautiful Ice formations. They all like to grow in (or create) their own space.... We have snow coming tomorrow, so they will be buried, but has been fun watching these "frosty leaves" develop.

An interesting thing this winter is, with the very early winter, many trees (leaves) froze before their "abscission zones" developed. These zones are where the leaves prepare to break-off. Eventually the leaves will fall, but a worry is that the leaves can collect much more snow than the bare twigs and this weight may bring down lots of branches. Had to google to find out about the abscission zone... every day's a school day....🤣

Autumn is well on its way. We love looking out and appreciating the beauty of the seasons.

"The Sauna Fairy"..... Saunas are a big part of life up here. If you are interested in visiting Lapland, here’s a typical itinerary you could enjoy on a 4-Night winter break at The Friendly Moose in Swedish Lapland. Swedish Lapland shares the nature, scenery and skies of Finnish Lapland, but also has its own sense of calm and peacefulness that comes from so much space and forest and the absence of large-scale commercial tourism. Your family or group will be able to adjust the activities and schedule to best meet your wishes and needs and any guests with additional needs can relax safe in the knowledge that the guiding, service and practical assistance you may need are all in place. Day 1: You will be welcomed at the airport (the service for guests with additional needs is very efficient in Scandinavia) and will then board our minibus for the scenic drive to Sweden. In Rovaniemi, we have the option to visit Santa and his Elves in their magical underground cavern and enjoy a super range of Santa-themes fun activities. The drive to Sweden takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes and passes through beautiful forest scenery. Keep a look out for moose and reindeer along the way. After time to settle in to your apartment, you will have a quick tour of the property and surroundings and have coffee in a chat in the cosy room. Evening activities can include gentle fun sledging, a walk along the riverside footpath (wheelchair accessible) looking out for the Northern lights and time by the wood-burner. Day 2: After a good sleep in a warm bed, we head off to meet the “King of the Forest” the moose. It is great to see these beautiful creatures up close and you can feed and stroke them. You will also meet the reindeer and enjoy a reindeer-pulled sled ride through the forest. Sweden’s “Moose whisperer” Öla, gives an entertaining talk on the Sami culture and we then enjoy a traditional meal. When I started this post, I thought some of you might like to enjoy reading an account of one of our guest’s Husky ride experience that turned out to be especially memorable……but I fear this may now be upstaged by the photos we received tonight, and wanted to share with you, of the very latest members to join the Husky pack. Meeting "parents" & trainers,Eva-Maria and Jakob, and their family of Huskies is a treat in itself and the affection and care they show these beautiful Siberian huskies is so evident. They are so good with all our guests, and are also totally on-board with our dream to make this experience as accessible as possible. They have 2 different types of sleds, one with a sort of cocoon system to wrap you in securely, and a great attitude to work with our guests to just make it possible. This was to be one of the highlights of our trip for sure and with a forecast for strong Northern lights we were wondering if we might be lucky enough to see those as well. Eva-Maria explained all about the dogs and their racing and their amazing abilities and it was clear to see just how well cared for and loved these huskies are. Although the skies had cleared we were treated to the beautiful sparkling spectacle of “diamond -dust” in the lights which, I was informed, is made up of tiny ice crystals that form when the air is very cold. It was around minus 20 deg c for our ride, so we had taken on board Paul’s advice to wrap up really warm and cover our faces as well. Set in the heart of the beautiful forested Tornedalen Valley surrounded by the region of Lapland, The Friendly Moose provides guests with disabilities/additional needs, slow-walkers etc. and their family members and friends, the chance to enjoy the wide range of experiences this magical place has to offer throughout the year whilst also being a great place to simply relax and unwind as you take in the fresh air and scenery.

Many holidays here offer accessible accommodation, but what makes a holiday at The Friendly Moose so different is the fact that guests with additional needs and disabilities can relax safe in the knowledge that your hosts, Paul and Maria, are there to make sure all those concerns and worries about transport, accessibility, attitudes, comfort, safety etc. are looked after and they will be on hand to help you enjoy your holiday.

The holidays are suited for guests with a wide range of additional needs (physical, learning and mental health etc.) and both Paul and Maria have many years of experience working in this area and assure you of a friendly, welcoming, understanding and accepting attitude as well as a willingness to adapt the holidays, routines etc. to whatever specific needs you might have. Let them know what you need and they will do all they can to make this possible.

You can experience 2 Countries from the one destination as The Friendly Moose sits right by the river that forms the border between Sweden and Finland and is perfectly placed for enjoying those special traditional wintertime experiences. Husky Sled rides, meeting Moose and Reindeer, Fantastic scenery with sightseeing drives, Ice Fishing, Fun in the snow, Nature walks and, of course, there is always the hope that mother nature will be kind and treat you to a display of the Northern Lights.

Please be aware that the winter environment and conditions here can still present challenges that require a willingness for guests to adapt and work with staff to find ways for each individual to best enjoy the many different experiences here, but at all times the safety, comfort and dignity of guests will be paramount. Because of this it might not be the right holiday for everyone.

The Friendly Moose is a year-round place to visit though and in May a dramatic transformation of colour sweeps the land as the trees and plants burst into life after the long winter under snow. The rivers begin to flow, all the different birdlife returns, wildlife abounds and from early June to early July the sun stays risen the whole day. Then, from around mid-September onwards, the spectacular autumn colours arrive and seeing the forest transform again is a breath-taking sight. Also in September although many people associate the aurora with cold and snowy winter scenery, the most active seasons are actually autumn and spring when the earth’s orientation towards the sun maximises the probability of solar flares interacting with the planet’s magnetic field to generate this phenomenon. The autumn lights are especially spectacular because the reflection on the water can create a beautiful double aurora!

The Friendly Moose Winter Holiday Packages are for 7 nights for 2 guests in a self-catering apartment (Additional guests can of course be added) and the rest of the year stays can be anything from 3 days and longer. In addition to standard single and kingsize beds, each apartment features I x electric adjustable single bed, a fully equipped kitchen with dining area, an accessible wetroom and shared access to the cosy lounge with wood-burner.
