Lyckholms was founded in 1880 by Johan Wilhelm Lyckholm as a Swedish brewery with activities at Mölndalsån in Gothenburg. In 1881, the production of beer was started.
Johan Wilhelm Lyckholm died in 1894 and was succeeded by his brother Melcher Lyckholm who developed the company into one of Sweden's largest and most modern breweries.
Lyckholms was the first in Sweden to use pure yeast and refrigeration.

From 1927 until 1975, Lyckholms was part of Pripps, which is one of Sweden's leading companies in brewery and is part of the Danish brewing group Carlsberg's company, which in turn is Danish.
