A sunny autumn day on Harstena with Bessie the dog. Made a mistake by packing a ball in the kayak. Lunch stop meant both dog and ball in the water and a soggy hot sponge between my legs on the paddle home. Superb solo paddle in silence with sea eagles and glitter.
Therese and I had a really great time coaching at the Friluftsfrämjandet kayak festival last weekend. Stensund Folkhögskolan provided the perfect venue and the atmosphere was chilled with some memorable learning moments. Big thanks to the organisers, Calle Crafoord, Ing-Marie Lidell-Edman and Leif Lövenberg.
Therese and I both paddled with our friend Jennie Hale this week in preparation for our kayak and watercolour journaling course next year. Jennie is a professional artist from Cornwall with an amazing eye for wildlife. We are planning a week's course next August based on Harstena, paddle to an island and draw and paint what catches your eye. Should be great fun and it will be open to all levels of watercolour painter and kayaker. bHere are a selection of Jennie's work from the archipelago, and one from Therese who's painting skills improved quickly under Jennie's watchful eye.
Just had a fine 5 day paddle in St Anna with a lovely couple from the UK. Saw an otter, peregrine falcon and of course eagles on a tour from Tyrislöt taking in Kupa Klint and Harstena. A very relaxing time was had by all.
Just home from a really fun weekend coaching the "purple paddlers" on Norra Vättern. Worked on a range of techniques and skills with lots of learner led coaching. Fun to see how things unfolded and to witness the "ah ha" moments when things made sense from the paddlers own discoveries. I hope working with this wonderful group of people is helping me to become a better coach! It's a lot of fun whatever the outcome.
A really enjoyable weekend coaching the coaches from Brunnsviken Club in Stockholm. A paddle out from Ankarudden to Öja with lots of technique training along the broken rocky shore line, capsizes, towing scenarios and different types of recovery. Pretty location and a lively and fully engaged group.
We just had a magnificent final sea kayak tour of the season on the West Coast of Sweden, Hamburgsund to Koster and back via Havstensund. The scenery was phenomenal and the group super chilled and competent. In perfect weather we paddled out to Koster, to the twin towers of Ursholmen light, down to Ramsö and a camp at Bissen. Going North we portaged 1 km at Edsvik to avoid rough water outside Tjurepannan, a minor challenge at the soggy put in. On a windy day on Stor Svinningen we met the super cheery Bengt and Felix from Nautopp, heading home from a trip to Väderöarna. Small world and top paddling.
We had an unusually wild and windy week in Höga Kusten with a group of 5. Strong Easterly or South Easterly winds saw us paddling the West side of Ulvön and then to Mjoltön and Höghölmen before heading back to Köpmanholmen. The group tasted surströmming and had a uniquely Swedish adventure. Great to meet up with Rick and Christa Hoeksema, stormbound in the harbour and then heading off to continue their blå bandet.
Last week we had a really fine sunny tour in Gryt archipelago with a lovely family from southern Sweden. The weather was amazing and the water was warm too. Great to share some skills, play some ukulele and enjoy the nature. Thank you to Boni, Lisa, Agneds and Matilda.
We just had our first Blue Paddle pass training course for the year out on Harstena. The weather was far too nice but there was as always plenty to learn. A wonderful enthusiastic group of students and Julie Perren from England as our guest coach. A good time was had by all.
Therese and I just had a really fun few days at Lökken in Denmark on the Cold Hawaii surf weekend with Nautopp. So nice to just get back into paddling in waves, braking to stay on top and turning with little stabs, finding the balance and playing with a forward position. A great bunch of people and top coaching and tips from Torbjörn and Jalle from Nautopp.
We enjoyed a really good navigation course with Gustav and Anna-Lena at the weekend out on Harstena. Theory in the boathouse and micro and macro nav, on the water, in daylight and at night. No moon but a clear night with awesome starlight. With settled weather we took the best possible way back to Fyrudden and visited some of the most beautiful islands in the archipelago.
After a tough week in the Lofoten islands we were blessed with warm sunny weather in Helgelands Kusten. Launching from Stockvågen we paddled round Onøya, out to Lovund then hopped on a ferry to Træna. Wonderful paddling to secret sandy beaches and then back to paddle around Lorøy. Unbelievable scenery and almost no-one else about. The regular ferry services between the main island groups makes this a very attractive paddling area and they are free in July! We delved a little into the history and the culture here, the men used to leave and go fishing for months in Lofoten. Such a shame we didn't have this weather the week before. We plan to return again next year!
It's so hard to do justice to a week in the Lofoten islands with a few words and pictures. The weather was mixed, the lansdcape moody and the paddling particularly atmospheric. A week of wild winds with strong downdrafts, rain and sun, fog and a big swell. Vaeroy at the end was simply stunning. A lovely group of people in a harsh natural environment. Dried fish heads being exported to Italy, the hard reality of making a living in this amazing place. We're drawn to return.
We had a really enjoyable paddle with our last Friluftsfrämjandet group for the summer today from Arkösund. A strong Westerly wind made a top trip around Arkö and Lunda. Looking forward to doing a few more such trips later this summer.
We just had a great weekend out on Harstena coaching the skills for the EPP Blue Paddle Pass. Lots of fun and a wonderfully enthusiastic and inspiring group. We paddled out from Fyrudden on the Friday evening and back again afterwards, the perfect way to frame a weekend, leave behind the hectic bustle and indulge in the peace of the archipelago.
Fun time in the pool at Gusum last night. With -15C outside it's great to think about rolls and work on those things that don't seem that natural. We're looking at doing some rolling coaching sessions in the spring.
We just had a great one-way tour from Arkösund to Ekön with Boni, Lisa, Agnes and Mathilda. Lots of weather gave us some exciting moments, wonderful to feel the change in atmosphere as we moved south, from the barren rocky islands of the outer North to the densely wooded larger islands of the South. Harestena gave us a chance to practise skills and rescues. So good to see everyone improve their paddling over the days and we had lots of fun ashore too.

Therese and I just led a very fine tour with a lovely group from Åviken near Ö-vik to the Höga Kusten Bridge. Fairly strong NW winds meant we could get really close to the beautiful wind worn rocks on the East of Trysunda, Skrubban and Ulvön. A walk up Mjältön and a late paddle to reach Yternäsan before the wind really blew from the North. Fika in Bönham and a walk on the pavements at Rötsidan before paddling in to Sweden's version of the Golden Gate. Some challenging crossings and memorable moments. The High Coast has to be my favourite part of Swedish coastline so far. Historical, dramatic, super varied and full of history.
Had a really nice demo paddle with Thomas yesterday to help him choose between the Lettmann Skinner and the Biskaya LV. Both great kayaks and super well made, but very different beasts. Working out of Harstena we could find all kinds of water to give the boats a good test. The Biskaya was very reassuring in the small waves but the Skinner was fast and super elegant. Sunshine and great pika stops too. Which would you choose?
Happy Midsummer from Harstena. We've refined the dog spray deck (Mark II) and have enjoyed some fine paddling with Bessie in the cockpit. She's learnt to sit still and wait for the next island to land on. Glassy return paddle with the water and sky merging on the horizon, Therese is loving her new Skinner, super smooth ad rather quick.
We had the last of our six Friluftsfrämjandet sessions last night, aimed at getting local people to try sea kayaking and to start an active Söderköping paddling group. It was lovely to see 9 on the water and we had a fantastic paddle from Arkösund, through the Kings channel to fika and swim in the warm evening glow. Thanks to all who've joined these classes. See you again soon.
We've just enjoyed a fantastic weekend coaching and guiding as part of the Östkusten kajak Ut o Njut I Gryt. The weather was amazing, the clients really great company and we managed a top tour today out to Häradsskär with it's iconic lighthouse and great swimming spot. Huge shout to Christian and Eva Karin for putting together a really good event.
I had a very beautiful evening paddle on Vättern with Kersti, Bertil and the Vättern paddling group. A nice mix of friendly people and widely differing kayaks, all happy to enjoy the nature and savour the moment.
