We looove our double kayaks. Isn’t a single more fun? Depends on what you’re using it for. In our area you don’t need any fancy maneuvers. It’s all about a wonderful vessel for experiencing beautiful nature. A double is faster with less effort. It’s stable, so u can chill mid-water and feel safe in choppy waters. It’s easy to load and unload for changing camps everyday. And it’s more social. You’re right there with your kayak buddy, taking it all in together. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

One of our favourite things: The Helinox One chair.

Why be uncomfortable, when you can be comfy? We bring these on all our guided kayaking tours. Super easy to put up and take down, don’t take up a whole lot of room and best of all, they last! When your gear gets as much use as ours does, it’s a massive plus when it’s virtually indestructible. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

When we first started our winter tours, we weren’t sure if anyone would be down to camp in the snow for two nights. Turned out, everyone was!

This year we even convinced some of our groups to go camping for three nights. That left us a bunch of extra time on the fjell for fun activities. Like this day, when Thomas took half the gang to practice downhill skiing on touring skis. Which isn’t easy!⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Navigating in an area with very few landmarks. It’s pretty tricky! One of our goals for our Level 2: Winter Expedition is for everyone to learn to navigate in mountain terrain. Everyone takes turns. We assist, but whoever does it is pretty much in charge for the day.

We have to very much rely on our compass bearing and contour lines on the map (lines that connect points of equal elevation). We look out over the landscape and try to identify anything that can give us clues to pair with the elevation on our map. It could be lakes and brooks, ravines, valleys and peaks. As we move through the terrain, we keep the map close at hand and continuously compare as soon as we discover changes in the landscape.

If you’re surrounded by mountains it can be a bit easier, then you can choose three peaks and triangulate your position. In Töfsingdalen, the peaks are not that identifiable. The best we can do is to use one peak and figure out the angle to where we are. We can draw a line and know that we are somewhere along that line, but not the exact position. So we gotta stay vigilant! The perfect place to practice. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Our very first Level 2: Winter Expedition completed! A five day camping expedition on touring skis. This time we went to Töfsingdalen – one of Sweden’s least visited national parks. None of us had been there before, guides included.

We started by the Grövelsjön mountain station in the fjells bordering Norway. It’s quite a busy area, but where we’re headed nobody goes! We spent a day crossing the plateau and descended into the valley by the region’s highest mountain ”Storvätteshågna”.

The next day we crossed the bridge into the Töfsingdalen valley. This is a completely untouched area with tonnes of boulders left behind from the ice age. The terrain is tricky for sure, but in winter, as opposed to summer, it’s actually doable.

On the third day, we left our camp behind and explored the area without our sleds. And boy is it worth it to tackle the terrain. Primeval forest, standing deadwood, tonnes of tracks from wildlife, rivers and lakes. The Norwegian mountains are our backdrop. No trails, no huts, nothing made by humans.

On day 4, it was time to head back out. We followed the river and ascended back up on the fjell via a different route than before. It had been some pretty exhausting days, and a fire in a little hut on the maintain was the ultimate luxury.

Our last day couldn’t have ended better. After a strenuous climb to the top of the fjell, we decided to skip downhill skiing. It’s kinda difficult on touring skis with a sled. Thomas came up with the brilliant idea of just sledding down instead. We packed our skis onto the sleds, took a seat, and hauled it down the mountain.

Such an amazing trip! Keep your eyes on our stories and posts the next few days for a lot more footage.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

What do we eat for a 5-day winter camping expedition? Same as during our shorter expeditions! We’re not about that freeze-dried life.

It’s cold out! Cooking from scratch isn’t a great option since all the ingredients freeze …and we don’t wanna loose our fingers if it’s real chilly. Instead we have our wilderness chef Helena cooking up a bunch of hearty stews and soups at her house. Into the freezer they go until we reheat ‘em out in the snow.

We munch on bolognese, goulash, bean chili, Morrocan harira soup, Mexican pozole and some other slow-cooked dishes that freeze well.

Tip from Helena! It all starts with onions, lots of ‘em. Cooked low and slow for like an hour. After that you can take your soup or stew in any direction. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Why do you see dome tents (Hilleberg Staika) on some winter pics and tunnel tents (Hilleberg Keron 3 GT) in others?

Well, the dome tent is lighter, smaller when packed, and easier to put up. But it’s not ideal for cooking “indoors”. We always bring a communal yurt for hanging out and cooking during those trips.

The tunnel tent has a roomy vestibule where we can cook protected from the elements. They’re perfect for winter camping expeditions when we move to a new location each day and don’t wanna bother with the yurt. There’s a lot to do and we need to both minimise and evenly share the workload. Each tent buddy team cook their own food, melt their own snow for drinking water and once your own tent is set up, you’re good to go. Well, some communal path digging too. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

It’s almost time for our very first Level 2: Winter Expedition, 10-16 March. We choose a new destination each tour, as new to us as it is to you!

Töfsingdalen has been on Thomas’s bucket list for years. What’s so special about it then? Well, it’s Sweden’s least visited national park and the highest altitude protected nature reserve that we have. The story of Töfsingdalen includes words like dead ice, primeval forest, standing deadwood, bears and lynx ...

Btw the photo is from a similar yet different expedition in Sarek National Park, we haven’t been to Töfsingdalen yet 😁.

DM us to receive our newsletter and find out why nobody goes there and why we wanna go there! It’s a bit too long to elaborate on here. We have a couple of spots left if you’re down for a last-minute! Prerequisites are either our Level 1 Winter Adventure in Northern Dalarna or if you have some other skitouring and winter camping experience.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

A snowbow on the Fulufjället Plateau! It’s a pretty rare phenomenon that forms when sunlight is reflected and refracted by ice crystals in the air. The sun gotta be low and it helps if temps are a bit balmy for wintertime.

A snowbow is fainter than a rainbow since the crystals simply aren’t as good at reflecting as raindrops. Being such a complex shape and all. ❄️❄️❄️⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Trick to stay warm and multi-purposing while winter camping. A hot water bottle in your sleeping bag!

Melt snow and boil water. Put a sock on the bottle and stick in your sleeping bag. It will warm it up until your body temp takes over. In the morning, you have a water bottle ready to go for your excursion! ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Lashing a table & bench combo that can hold the weight of 10 people. Rope and poles are all you need!

We build this every year for our Culinary Adventure and Flavours of the Archipelago tours. Lots of cooking. We wanna both have a comfy prep table and somewhere nice to sit down and enjoy the dinner we labored so long over.

Pure scout knowledge, this! There wasn’t much confidence from the rest of the crew when Helena pitched this idea a few years ago. Not really known as the builder of the group, but 10 years in the scouts paid off!

Some lashing terminology coming your way. You can build almost anything like this. Shear lashings for the A-frames. Square lashings for the beams. Floor lashings for the table top. Start each lashing with a timber hitch, finish with a clove hitch.

Try it out!! It’s easy, not annoyingly precise like renovating your home or something, and you can build a really strong structure. Best of all, when u don’t need it anymore, just cut off the ropes and use the poles for firewood. No nails, no nothing. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

One of our favorite things: Bathing in an ice hole! It’s pretty much our daily routine during our winter tours. It’s not as brutal as it sounds, we promise! The sauna is a hop and a skip away after all. It’s quite addictive and many even experience a kind of ”high” afterwards.

There are actually a bunch of proven health benefits. It releases endorphins and makes you happier. The surge of adrenaline gives you an energy boost. It improves your blood circulation and soothes aching muscles. You really should try it!⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

And last but certainly not least…Philly!! To say that he has an understated charm is an understatement. It’s impossible not to love this funny and considerate pack of muscles from Newcastle. A skilled kayaking and dogsledding guide, and perhaps the most easy-going adventurer you’ll ever meet. This self-appointed preacher of hammock praise has spread the gospel of sleeping while hanging amongst the entire crew. Even the last holdout, Rob, finally converted last year!

A few newbies joining us too this summer!! Can’t wait to get to know y’all!

Continuing our Meet the Crew series with Linda G, you’re in for a good time! This Austrian kayaking guide and photog is bursting at the seams with energy and warmth, and has a real knack for getting anyone to pop out of their shell. The master of making something extraordinary outta nothing. And taking that something extraordinary all the way over the top. If you’re game, anything can happen. A sunrise paddle at 3 in the morning or a dance-off at dusk, who knows…
