Famous as a festive winter wonderland with Northen Lights, travel to Lapland for tranquil ice castles, adventures on a dogsled and even chance encounters with Santa himself.
Check the video and read the instructions below, so once you're enjoying a husky safari with us, all this will already be somewhat familiar to you. In any case and for safety reasons, our guides will make sure that you understand everything before our husky safari departs.
Instructions for the dog sledge driver:
Keep both of your feet on the runners and both hands on the handlebar. The driver cannot take any pictures.
The guides on the safari will show you three signs:
1) When the guide puts their hand straight up: It means that you have to STOP the sledge by standing on the brake (a metal breaking device at the back of the sledge) with BOTH feet.
2) When the guide puts their hand up and down: It means "let's go". Release the brake, slowly at first, and go. If the sledge does not move forward you can push it a little while making sure you keep the other foot on the runner.
3) When the guide waves their arm up and down out to the side: It means “slow down”, you need to use the brake with ONE foot. It is very important to always keep a safety distance of 5-10 metres between your first dog (running as a leader) and the sledge in front of you.
Instructions for the dog sledge passenger:
The passenger(s) will sit inside the sledge following the instructions of the guides, and will keep always the feet and hands inside the sledge while we are moving.
Changing the drivers:
The driver must stand on the brake with BOTH feet.
Then the passenger will stand up and come to stand on the brake also. When the new driver is standing on the brake, the other one will go sit as a passenger in the sledge. The driver will stand on the brake with both feet until seeing the sign “lets go”.

The destination Swedish Lapland increases by 5 percent in the number of guest nights for 2018, an increase spread throughout the year, according to preliminary accommodation statistics from Statistics Sweden. The proportion of foreign guest nights increases from 29 to 33 percent, a good rating for the attractive companies that exist and the marketing efforts made within the destination.
Today, the preliminary accommodation statistics for 2018 were released - a record year for Swedish Lapland. The total increase, compared with 2017, lands at +5 percent. An increase higher than the national average and in nine out of twelve months the number of visitors has been highest ever.
- Our already strong winter season continues to increase by 13 percent compared to the previous year. But even more important for the development of the industry is that we see that the increase is distributed throughout the year for the markets we are processing, says CEO Erika Mattsson.
- Together with local destinations and companies, we work actively to strengthen all seasons, because we are aware that the destination has a lot to offer the global traveler, all year round. Therefore, it is also extra fun that we crossed the border of 1 million foreign guest nights in 2018, Erika continues.
More guests with new direct flights
In 2018, both Skellefteå and Kiruna got a direct flight from Rotterdam and Amsterdam respectively, a summer time and a winter time. An establishment that was followed up with targeted marketing and increase in Dutch guest nights by 42 percent.
-Swedish Lapland has a lot that attracts the Dutch traveler - firstly our Fly & Drive concept that suits good summer time and secondly we have our ice creams that attract the Dutch skating school in winter. It takes time to build awareness of a new destination with the traveler, which is why it is fun to see that we are already attracting many new Dutch guests here the first year we are here, says Johanna Ögren, Marketing Manager.
Stay longer campaign
Digital summer campaigns against especially Norway have been very successful this year, both in terms of getting the campers here and then getting them to stay a few extra nights. From May to September, the highest number of Norwegian guest nights was ever recorded.
- Together with the destination's camping companies, we have targeted digital advertising about current events and offers to the Norwegian guests who have already been on site here in the region to make them stay longer. It has been extra fun to see that many campsites have actually done business directly on Facebook Messenger thanks to our advertising campaigns, says Marketing Manager Johanna Ögren.
Key markets such as the UK and Germany have also increased in 2018, but the fastest growing markets are the Netherlands, the US and parts of Asia - especially India, Singapore and Taiwan. The proportion of foreign visitors amounted to 33 percent in 2018 compared to 29 percent the previous year, which is higher than the national average.
