February 4th is celebrated annually as Independence Day in Sri Lanka. The country gained its political independence from British colonial rule on February 4, 1948. Then British Ceylon was granted independence as the Dominion of Ceylon. Dominion status within the British Commonwealth was retained for the next 24 years until May 22, 1972, when it became a republic and was renamed the Republic of Sri Lanka.
It is a significant day for the people of Sri Lanka to reflect on their history and commemorate the struggles and sacrifices made for independence. Independence Day celebrations feature a multitude of spectacular events, dances, parades, and performances, including a national flag-raising ceremony. All struggles made in the history of Sri Lanka are remembered and celebrated. But the independence movement against British rule is especially recalled.
Today, the country celebrates its 76th Independence Day celebrations at Galle Face Green, Colombo, and the theme for this year's Independence Day is: Let's Build a New Country.

Adam’s Peak, also known as “Sri Pada," is a mountain in Sri Lanka that is sacred to almost all Sri Lankans. The summit of the mountain contains a footprint that belongs to a holy figure. For Buddhists, it is the footprint of Buddha. Muslims believe that it was Adam, and Hindus believe it belongs to God Shiva, who left it after being cast out of heaven. For many, a hike up to Adams Peak will be a very unique and humbling experience.
The challenge of the climb, the stunning beauty of the mountain, and the unique cultural experience make it a truly unforgettable adventure. Sure, it’s tough, but it’s worth it.
The season to visit Adam's Peak is between January and May.

Hoppers are so cool these days with tourists seeming more willing to try local food, so if you’re heading to Sri Lanka you should have no problem finding them.

in their simplest form are bowl-shaped pancakes made from fermented rice flour and coconut milk. Egg hoppers are simply a plain hopper with an egg cracked in the bottom.
Cooked in small round hopper pans over a medium-heat gas flame, hoppers tend to come out crispy around the edges, and thicker at the bottom.

The Sri Lankan leopard is a leopard subspecies native to Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan leopard has been listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, as the population is estimated at less than 800 mature individuals, and is considered endangered and declining. It is the strongest climber of the larger cats and is capable of killing prey far larger than itself. However, the leopard is the smallest member of the genus Panthera, which includes the Lion, Tiger, and Jaguar. Even though it is found in fewer numbers, are more easily observed in Sri Lanka than in any other Asian country.
Visitors of Sri Lanka taking part in a safari should be aware, that watching leopards differs from elephant safaris. Observers have to stay at a distance in order to gain some trust in the animal. The most important piece of advice is to be quiet.
