SPEAKER 2023: Dr Pieter Naude Malan, Associate Professor in Business Management at the University of Johannesburg and a Member of Council at the Agricultural Research Council of South Africa, will be presenting "Nxazonke: Action Research to Build Sustainable Urban Agricultural Enterprises in South Africa".

Recent literature has indicated cities can feed themselves with fruit and vegetables provided 30% of available land surface is devoted to production of these. This emphasises urban agriculture (UA) as means to make this possible, but this also implies a significant change in how the food system is organised. The food system may have to undergo decisive changes in this scenario, which also creates opportunities for sustainable change. We may expect changes to the whole food chain - from inputs to production, to retail and distribution, as well as waste. As the food system depends on the free trade and distribution to guard against food insecurity, it is necessary to see "entrepreneurship" as the leading concept and means to realise this. Dr Malan will discuss this opportunity and provide a narrative on alternative enterprise forms that can realise sustainable food production in the South African urban context.
