Ridge View Residential College (RVRC) - A uniquely new residential learning experience for Year One students.

Ridge View Residential College (RVRC) offers students a distinct two-year living-learning experience to foster a community of growth and excellence. The RVRC Programme models values of stewardship to the society and the environment enabled through robust inter-disciplinary education, active community engagement, and critical introspection. Throughout their residency, our students work closely with

dedicated Fellows, called ‘Academic Advisors’. Learning is conducted in small groups to enhance student engagement with Academic Advisors and peers. This ensures that our students have ample opportunities and support for individual growth during their residency at RVRC. Formal learning in the academic modules is complemented by a suite of co-academic activities and initiatives aligned with students' individual interests and the College values. These activities make learning fun while becoming the catalyst for strategic learning outcomes beyond the classroom and to further the college mission to hone future-oriented leaders.

Over the past several months, RVRC’s Outreach Team has been working diligently in hosting various Junior Colleges to share how the college incorporates sustainability and workplace readiness education within academic and co-academic activities. RVRC’s Student Ambassadors engaged the visitors in lively conversations, sharing their personal experiences about life at the college. Visitors also toured the residential facilities, to experience firsthand why RVRC is The College in Nature. 🌿 To all our guests, we thank you for visiting us and we hope that the simulated class sessions have demonstrated RVRC’s interactive and experiential learning approach. We look forward to hosting you again!

RVN2002 in the heart of Malaysian rainforests! 🍃🌿

Over the summer break, students reading RVN2002 visited the Malaysian wilderness! Through experiences like anti-poaching cat walks with .so in the Sungai Yu corridor, engaging indigenous Orang Asli communities in Taman Negara, and wildlife identification along with conservation challenges with ECOMY in Fraser's Hill, the course enables students to immerse themselves in the outdoors and experience the rich biodiversity of the landscape. Consequently, students are encouraged to think critically about environmental sustainability, conservation strategies, and sustainable solutions in the region.

Matthew Ng, the Teaching Assistant (TA) for the course shared - “The wonder of nature is best enjoyed when shared with others and I was glad to share that experience with others as a TA. The trips challenged me to think and process ideas as an educator, as I realised that not everyone has the same foundational knowledge. I was very encouraged to see students adapt and immerse themselves in nature, while learning more about themselves in the process. On a personal note, I am thankful to have had the chance to slow down and really take in the beauty of the natural world and appreciate it.”

Last semester, 53 students showed remarkable courage and determination as they participated in an exhilarating aquatic adventure: Dragon Boating!

Teams paddled in unison, striving for victory as the sun shimmered on the water’s surface and the sound of paddles slicing through the waves filled the air. Dragon boating demonstrates the power of trust and collaboration. Each paddler must cultivate these qualities with their teammates through honesty, empathy, and dedication. Success depends on the crew’s ability to synchronize their movements seamlessly and collaborate towards a common goal. These are the learning objectives of this course, where students identify and manage emotions in themselves and others and apply verbal, nonverbal, and empathic listening skills to reflect and effectively connect with others.

Dragon boating exemplifies team engagement and the importance of a shared objective, perfectly reflecting the course’s theme: “How in the world do we get along?”

Bioblitz

As part of the RVRC Citizen Science Programme, the college conducted its first Bioblitz on 23rd April 2024. The Bioblitz is a wildlife survey organised by NParks, where citizens survey birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and bees. For the first time ever, RVRC has become an official survey site for the NParks Bioblitz. RVRC students Matthew Ng, Germayne Tan, Pauline Ng, and Lim Xin Ee joined RVRC Fellow Patricia Lorenz for this activity and recorded a staggering number of wildlife on the RVRC Campus:

17 Butterfly species
9 Dragonfly and Damselfly species
4 Bee species

This is clearly a testimony that RVRC is truly a College in Nature!💜

Dr. Eunice awarded the RCTEA 2023

The NUS Residential Colleges Teaching Excellence Committee (RCTEC) awarded the Residential Colleges Teaching Excellence Award 2023 (Individual) to Dr. Eunice Ng, in recognition of her excellence in teaching. She was presented with the award by Prof. Bernard Tan (Senior Vice Provost Undergraduate Education) during a ceremony held at University Town, to celebrate the contributions and successes of all the award winners from the NUS Residential Colleges. Congratulation!

As part of Ridge View Residential College's (RVRC) 10-day educational and cultural tour of Malaysia, a group of 30 undergraduate students and three teachers from RVRC, Singapore, had the opportunity to embark on a leisurely yet educational nature walk at Panti Bird Sanctuary (PBS) in Kota Tinggi on 15 May 2024. The walk was thoughtfully curated by the Malaysian Nature Society Johor Branch (MNSJ) and took place amidst the lush tropical rainforest surroundings.

Grad Dinner 2024! ✨💃🕺

A team of RVRC Seniors organized our yearly farewell dinner for the graduating Year Two students, on 19th April at the NUS Guild House. This year's theme was 'Masquerade', 🎭🎭 explaining the beautiful display of masks worn by our students, Fellows, and Admin staff! The event included delicious food 🤤, awesome performances by Jukebox 🎶🎵, brilliant entertainment (thank you emcees!)🎤, and a photobooth to capture memories of the night 📸!

Working in collaboration with NUS Sustainability, RVRC hosted the Rolex Award for Enterprise Laureate, Ms. Denica Riadini-Flesch. The dialogue on 13 March 2024, open to the NUS community, was to enable students to learn about her experience in founding and leading SukkhaCitta. SukkhaCitta is a social enterprise that empowers craftswomen and smallholder farmers by developing a regenerative farm-to-closet clothing supply chain. Through this dialogue, the NUS community learned about Denica’s efforts to preserve local Indonesian culture and create a positive impact on the natural environment by leveraging on indigenous wisdom to grow cotton regeneratively and reintroducing natural dyes to colour the fabrics. The dialogue also explored the positive impacts that youth can make on sustainable development, the role of indigenous people in achieving sustainability, and the importance of a contextualised approach to implementing sustainability solutions.

RVRC celebrates with Ms. Denica on her achievements and we express our appreciation to Rolex for hosting RVRC students at their earlier cocktail reception. As part of Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative, the Rolex Awards for Enterprise enables innovators like Denica to improve lives while protecting the planet for future generations through their ambitious projects around the world.

In December 2023, a team of 18 RVRC students embarked on a 12-day trip to Taiwan for RVRC’s inaugural STEER ✈️ The STEER trip provided a comprehensive exploration of Taiwan, delving into its diverse landscapes, fostering an understanding of its indigenous tribes, agricultural practices and sustainability initiatives. Students also had the opportunity to learn about Taiwan’s innovative approaches to renewable energy. 🌎🌱

Outstanding Social Worker Award 2023 ✨💫

Last Saturday, our Resident Fellow A/P Peace Wong Yuh Ju was awarded with the Outstanding Social Worker Award of 2023! The OSWA is the highest degree of award conferred to Social Workers by the President of the Republic of Singapore, to recognise the dedication and contribution in the Social Work field.

Our College Master A/P Sim, along with some of our faculty members, administrative staff and students had the honour of attending the award ceremony held at the Istana 🏰

Organised by ’s Events & Welfare committee, the week was packed with endless activities! RVRC residents got to experience eerie haunted houses each with a unique scare factor, spooky movie screenings, photobooths, exciting games and sweet treats. 🍬🍫🍩🎞🎬🍿📸🤳 Also, a shoutout to the different house committees for transforming and decorating the BOO-tiful lounges!

RVRC Sundown Welcome Dinner 2023 🌅✨

RVRC hosted its annual welcome dinner last week. It was a key milestone for the college as the event was planned to host more than 600 residents together, for the first time ever!

RVRCians traded in their t-shirts for elegant evening dresses & linen wear for a fun filled evening ✨

The evening started on a high with College Master Sim Tick Ngee’s witty speech, followed by RVRC Jukebox and Dance Revo’s breathtaking performances 💃
The Best Dressed Competition and RVRC’s very own “This or That!” Quiz brought cheers and applause as friends took to the stage in style 🤩

Our 2 beautifully decorated photo-booths were also a hit, and we hope you managed to snap a photo to cherish these wonderful memories with your friends! 📸🤗

RVRC's 8th CSC takes charge 💜🎉

A renewed student leadership for the college, led by Basil Tan Song Sze, took charge with a dedicated team of talented students and presented their vision ✨ to the RVRC College Master and Fellows. They aim to 'improve RVRC’s Student Life through engaging and meaningful activities for all residents, and to promote better connections and collaborations within RVRC's communities and with external parties'.

They have an exciting and meaningful suite of activities planned, with the usual student favourites such as the Carnival and IHG, and also new initiatives such as the recurring Welfair Wednesdays. Here's wishing the CSC our very best as we look forward to their activities in the year ahead! 🥳

MEWR Year of Climate Action Lunch on 28 Nov - RVRC Jukebox Performance

JukeBox performs at MEWR Year of Climate Action Lunch Jukebox, the student music interest group of Ridge View Residential College (RVRC) was invited to perform at the MEWR Year of Climate Action Lunch on 28 Nov to a diverse audience of sustainability partners and stakeholders, with Minister Masagos Zulkifli in attendance. Jukebox represented by Sulaiman Daud (Year 2 RVRC), Yeap Yong Ern Joel (Year 1 RVRC) and Lee Yi Wei, Joel (Year 2 RVRC) performed cover versions of “Gravity” by John Mayer and “Yellow” by Coldplay for the event at Orchard Hotel. The students had creatively rewritten the lyrics to both songs to adapt them to the theme of sustainability. Their lyrics were inspired by their personal learning about sustainability challenges at RVRC, where environmental stewardship is a core value.

GEQ1917: Understanding and Critiquing Sustainability

GEQ1917 is one of the three year-long compulsory modules undertaken by all Year One RVRC students. It fulfils the ‘Asking Questions’ pillar of the five General Education modules required of all NUS undergraduates. This module provides an overview of the principles and practices of sustainability from different disciplinary perspectives. Through inquiry, exploration, application, project work and mentorship by industry leaders, students learn to think critically and ask questions. Students also develop change agent capacity by implementing and testing solutions for sustainability challenges.
