Ridge View Residential College

Ridge View Residential College Ridge View Residential College (RVRC) - A uniquely new residential learning experience for Year One students.

Ridge View Residential College (RVRC) offers students a distinct two-year living-learning experience to foster a community of growth and excellence. The RVRC Programme models values of stewardship to the society and the environment enabled through robust inter-disciplinary education, active community engagement, and critical introspection. Throughout their residency, our students work closely with

dedicated Fellows, called ‘Academic Advisors’. Learning is conducted in small groups to enhance student engagement with Academic Advisors and peers. This ensures that our students have ample opportunities and support for individual growth during their residency at RVRC. Formal learning in the academic modules is complemented by a suite of co-academic activities and initiatives aligned with students' individual interests and the College values. These activities make learning fun while becoming the catalyst for strategic learning outcomes beyond the classroom and to further the college mission to hone future-oriented leaders.

This year, RVRC celebrates its 10th anniversary, a milestone that has seen learning at the residential college transcend the boundaries of the classroom, and its students playing an active role in contributing towards sustainability efforts in NUS and the community. From empowering students to champion green practices to creating a vibrant, inclusive community, this milestone is a testament to the dedication and vision of everyone involved.

As part of RV10, the College’s initiative to encapsulate the anniversary celebrations, a series of commemorative events were held to strengthen the college culture and collective sense of community among its students, alumni, and staff.

In the early morning hours of 26 October 2024, the RVRC community gathered at the Harbourfront area for the Walk for Rice, a long-running signature event at RVRC to support vulnerable families. In partnership with NTUC, for every 300 meters walked, food donations were made to support vulnerable families, turning each step into a meaningful act of kindness. With the support of 52 RVRC students and staff, a total of 520 kilometres were clocked, making possible a donation of 1,733 packets of rice and oatmeal to mark RV10 celebrations. 🍚🎆

The Walk for Rice 2024 effort continued beyond that launch date till 18 Nov, with students and staff clocking daily distances walked, and will add to this initial contribution and take the final donation much larger.

Dr. Noeleen Heyzer’s commitment to practicing transformational leadership was the focus of her informal conversation with the RVRC Fellowship on 22nd August 2024. The session was facilitated by College Master A/P Sim Tick Ngee, who began the session with a brief overview of the RVRC mission and how it translates into the academic, student, and residential life at the College. This was followed by an exploration of potential opportunities in seeking mentorship from Dr. Heyzer, given her extensive experience in championing critical causes related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

In response, Dr. Heyzer started by saying that when she saw the College poster saying “The World is Our Classroom” she knew that RVRC is a special place, and she is honoured to be part of the community. RVRC’s focus on sustainability is about transforming our world, which is the agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To achieve them goes beyond the usual siloed academic boundaries. Practicing leadership in sustainability requires taking a holistic approach. This approach is so relevant in preparing students not just to be workplace-ready but ready for our fast-changing world. In such a world we are challenged not to seek just the big but also the small and the unseen that can create meaningful societal impacts. She ended with a short reflection on her motivation to write her memoir ‘Beyond Storms and Stars’, which shows transformations to impact lives can be made by a leader using shared values despite the many challenges of the UN system. Dr. Heyzer then took questions related to her professional work, the advice she would give to aspiring changemakers, and the tenacity of overcoming personal challenges.

The informal conversation continued over light refreshments, and wrapped up with Dr. Heyzer signing a copy of her book for the College. We look forward to continued engagement with, and learning from, Dr. Heyzer in different student and staff activities.

RVN2002 in the heart of Malaysian rainforests! 🍃🌿

Over the summer break, students reading RVN2002 visited the Malaysian wilderness! Through experiences like anti-poaching cat walks with .so in the Sungai Yu corridor, engaging indigenous Orang Asli communities in Taman Negara, and wildlife identification along with conservation challenges with ECOMY in Fraser's Hill, the course enables students to immerse themselves in the outdoors and experience the rich biodiversity of the landscape. Consequently, students are encouraged to think critically about environmental sustainability, conservation strategies, and sustainable solutions in the region.

Matthew Ng, the Teaching Assistant (TA) for the course shared - “The wonder of nature is best enjoyed when shared with others and I was glad to share that experience with others as a TA. The trips challenged me to think and process ideas as an educator, as I realised that not everyone has the same foundational knowledge. I was very encouraged to see students adapt and immerse themselves in nature, while learning more about themselves in the process. On a personal note, I am thankful to have had the chance to slow down and really take in the beauty of the natural world and appreciate it.”

Last semester, 53 students showed remarkable courage and determination as they participated in an exhilarating aquatic adventure: Dragon Boating!

Teams paddled in unison, striving for victory as the sun shimmered on the water’s surface and the sound of paddles slicing through the waves filled the air. Dragon boating demonstrates the power of trust and collaboration. Each paddler must cultivate these qualities with their teammates through honesty, empathy, and dedication. Success depends on the crew’s ability to synchronize their movements seamlessly and collaborate towards a common goal. These are the learning objectives of this course, where students identify and manage emotions in themselves and others and apply verbal, nonverbal, and empathic listening skills to reflect and effectively connect with others.

Dragon boating exemplifies team engagement and the importance of a shared objective, perfectly reflecting the course’s theme: “How in the world do we get along?”
