Ngoh Guitars
Ngoh Thiam Meng started constructing his first guitar in 2006, in remembrance of his late father Ngoh Chin Peow, who made and played his own Erhu (Chinese bowed instrument) at Chinese opera performances. Meng first learnt how to play the moon lute or the lang ting tang (a Chinese two-stringed guitar) from his father when he as 11, and he eventually upgraded to the six-stringed classic
al guitar at 15. He went on to have various solo performances, including the Singapore Arts Festival in 1997, and first runner-up at the Singapore Guitar Festival competition in the same year. Now, Meng is a member of the Guild of American Luthiers. Besides hand making classical guitars individually, Meng has also enhanced and restored over 900 guitars, including precious works such as 1971 Jose Romanillos, Jose Ramirez, Paulino Bernabe, Jeffery Elliot, John Hal etc. His restoration works covers various structural and playability areas including guitar setup, bridge reglue, various crack repairs, French polish, etc
