✨VISIT THE NATIONAL GALLERY FROM NOW TILLL MARCH END ✨

Event 1 - Tropical: Stories from Southeast Asia & Latin America (Now - 24 March)

Tropical: Stories from Southeast Asia & Latin America is the first large-scale museum exhibition that adopts a comparative approach across two regions united by their shared struggles against colonialism. Consisting of over 200 artworks, this exhibition spans the 20th century, tracing how artists from Southeast Asia and Latin America forged connections and nurtured solidarities, defiantly reclaiming their place within the story of art. 👩‍🎨

The exhibition spans across 3 galleries, each exploring distinct themes.

Gallery 1 - The Myth of the Lazy Native & Library of the Tropics
In the late 1920s, artists embarked on a transformative journey to challenge and reshape the alluring yet distorted depiction of the 'natives' living in tranquil and exotic tropical landscapes. The library of the Tropics is a special interactive zone within the exhibition that showcases an intriguing collection of books, films, paintings, posters and cultural objects.

Gallery 2 - This Earth of Mankind
In the 1940s, a seismic shift was underway in the two regions, Many regions were on the verge of transformation. Through these tumultuous times, artists turned to self-portrait as a means to depict their shared view for mankind, holding on to the promise of a future where everyone is equal.

Gallery 3 - The Subversive
Through the 20th century, artists advocates for the dispossessed and champions of reclaiming what remained in the wake of dissipating colonial shadows, bolding breaking free from the western influencers.

Event 2 - Untitled By Shilpa Gupta (Now - 31 March)
In this artwork, two bodies are seen interlocked in a combative position. However, upon closer examination, viewers realized that they are in fact perched on a single head. The two bodies can be read from the perspective of geopolitical conflicts and social struggles of the dualities that individuals experience within themselves in everyday life. By using an inflatable medium, it creates a unique approach towards the visitors in a more playful and exploratory manner. This non-traditional approach to art-making opens up new possibilities for engagement and interaction with diverse communities, creating opportunities for unexpected and meaningful encounters. This sculpture undergoes cleaning every Wednesday from 830am-1pm, to ensure its longevity and preservation.

3 Events that you SHOULD NOT MISS OUT in Gardens by the Bay: 🌱

🐉 Dahlia Dreams 2024: In view of the dragon year, Gardens by the Bay Annual Chinese New Year Flora Display comes to life with a close to 7-metre TALL dragon with the length of over 15-metre in length! Complementing together with this are four colourful dragon lantern sets, symbolizing earth, fire, metal and water. To bring in positivity, the floral display also features a Chinese saying 鱼跃龙门, which translates into “carps leap over the dragon gate”, a metaphor for courage and the pursuit of greatness. This masterful artwork is featured in Flower Dome, until 17 March only.

🌸 Orchids of Machu Picchu: In collaboration with the Embassy of Peru and Inkaterra, featuring an enchanting display of orchids found only in the region of the UNESCO world heritage site. Additionally, a special collection of preserved orchids in glass resin will also be on display in an Orquideario, a display terrarium specifically featuring orchids. This is the first time this precious collection that captures the flowers' intricate beauty and delicate details has been brought out of Peru, and they will be showcased with other species and hybrids of Peruvian ancestry, until 31 March.

🦍Love the Last March: Creating of sculptures all around the world that tell the stories of these endangered species to drive positive change and ensure these animals don’t leave us forever. This exhibition showcases the different animals which are so close to extinction if we do not change their life for them! Depicting the greatest animal march on the planet, it will feature 45 of the world’s most endangered species led by a gorilla, marching together to save the animal kingdom by re-wilding the world. This exhibition is made to be interactive, so that visitors can scan the QR code to learn more about the animal's behavior, well-being and most importantly why it is threatened.
