“To tell a woman everything she cannot do is to tell her what she can” - Spanish Proverb

Happy International Women’s Day (we know we’re a little late🎂!) This year’s campaign calls us to “ Choose To Challenge”

We choose to challenge social stigma and discrimination associated with mental health.

From challenge comes change and we want to see equality between physical and mental illness.

Everyone has a role to play in creating a mentally healthy community - one that is inclusive, rejects discrimination and supports recovery.

We’ve come a long way as a community but there is still so much more work to do. We are grateful for the women before us who have sacrificed, paved ways and created opportunities for women today.

This proves one thing without a doubt:
Women are already strong.

So we’re not here to prove or to ‘be strong’. We’re here to change the way the world perceives that strength.

PS: Throwback to our in 2019 where we roughed it all up and trekked for hours through the forest!

** JANUARY’S COMMUNITY BRUNCH TALK** (3 SPOTS LEFT) Sign up link in our bio!

2020 has been a difficult year for many of us. While our experiences with the COVID-19 pandemic may be different from each other, we know that aspects of a pandemic can contribute to both individual and collective trauma.

Disruptions in daily life, feelings of being stuck, lonely, disconnected, increased feelings of vulnerability are some of the effects that we may or are still experiencing. For some people, a traumatic event like this can trigger past traumas. On the other hand, some may struggle in accepting and understanding new feelings and reactions that they’ve not experienced before previously.

With a future that seems uncertain, how can we learn to embrace and thrive in uncertainty?

What is uncertainty?

Is it an attempt to escape commitment or does it come from a place of deep commitment?

Is it being about a liberation from pain and difficulty or does embracing uncertainty requires us to face things in a way that is both hard and courageous?

How do we begin to heal?

In this session, we will explore these themes and share our experiences in a safe non judgemental space both individually and as a group. And as per our tradition, warm food and drinks will be served for our intimate circle gathering.

Hey Growth Warriors! 💚

In this week’s we have the ever so comforting and our favourite embroidery teacher (Nasyitah has been one of our active supporters in empowering ladies through embroidery skills the past few years!) 🙌🏽! The word “mother” carries a meaning which is unique to each person and their own personal experiences. For some, today is a day of rightful celebration and victory. For some, today is a day of grief, loss, longing. Whatever you feel today, you are allowed to feel the way you feel. 💚

Here’s to the woman that gets up everyday and tries again and gives her all, serving a purpose bigger than herself.
To the one who is always hopeful, loving, forgiving, patient, nurturing to others; may you never forget that YOU are deserving of that love, forgiveness, patience and nurture too.

Happy Mother’s Day 💚

Hey growth warrior,

Here’s letting you know that we’re still here and will continue to be 💚

We know that while some are grateful for the extension of the Circuit Breaker in Singapore, there are many others who are struggling in unsafe homes, in stressful roles and responsibilities and many more. We hear you, we see you and we want to carry those struggles that you’ve been shouldering all by yourself all this while. Please know that you are not alone in this.

We will be hosting a free virtual and private Communal Creative session this weekend and if you love drawing/doodling, we hope you’ll join us in gathering like how we always do, create together and celebrate our little wins. We’ll be sharing the details in our next post!

Truly, in community do we find healing 💚

*SUPPORT AND RESOURCES FOR VIOLENCE AND ABUSE VICTIMS (SINGAPORE)*

AMENDMENT: We’ve been informed of some updates with regards to our resource here. Kindly note that AWWA and Lakeside Family services are not specialised in family violence work and would not be able to provide appropriate resources if people call in for help. The three family violence specialist centres in SG are : PAVE, TRANSSAFE and Care Corner Project Start. PAVE has recently integrated its family violence and child abuse centers and expanded to work to extra-familial violence like dating violence. Safe Space doesn’t exist anymore because PAVE has integrated both centres.

As Singapore implements circuit breaker measures from 7 April onwards, there will be an increase in social isolation. This means that victims of family violence are now trapped at home with their abusers to an unprecedented degree, thus making it more difficult for victims to reach out for help.

There are many evidences in the past that show family violence rates rise in the wake of emergencies such as natural disasters and disease outbreaks.

This resource is made for everyone because abuse does not discriminate. Always look out for one another, check in on your friend/family who may have gone quiet during this period to see if they are okay and if there’s any way you can support them.

If you are someone who is experiencing violence, please know that you CAN reach out for help and you are deserving to feel safe and secured. Your safety and your life matters.

Here’s a list that we’ve gathered and though it may not be exhaustive, we hope that it helps. Please include in the comments if you know of any resources that are not included here and would be beneficial 💚

*MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES AND SUPPORT FOR COVID-19 IN SINGAPORE*

If you or a loved one is currently struggling with the current situation, please do know that you don’t need to go through it all by yourself.

Here’s a list that we’ve gathered (clinics, websites and apps) and though it may not be exhaustive, we hope that it helps. Please include in the comments if you know of any places/websites/apps that are not included here and are helpful in this period 💚

Thank you to our medical professionals, counsellors who have offered free, reduced rates and pay as you can services in this time of crisis.

In challenging and uncertain times, may we never give up looking for the helpers. We will always find people who are helping and not forgetting that we too can be that source of light and comfort to others.

Sneaks of March’s Exploration with Clay and sharing the process and creations of our participants. We shared about our experiences with triggers and how it made us felt. We also discussed the concept of boundaries and identifying what keeps us safe. Both sides of emotions were represented and expressed through the creation of clay in literal or abstract forms.

Here are the works that are posted with permission. Swipe to see bits of the process!

We’re hosting a small (only 5 participants) Communal Creative programme using embroidery as a form of healing in April. This session is especially for ladies who have no safe space in their physical environment to practice mental wellness during this challenging time. Our objectives for these sessions is to encourage art as a medium of expression, healing and recovery. There’s no right or wrong in art, but rather a means of reaffirming who you are/was/could be and what matters to you most.

More details can be found by clicking the Communal Creative link in our profile 💚

This information may also be found on our website.

Update: 25 March 2020

Our community was built by the belief that connection and communion are the basic needs to healing and recovery. Though this may be a trying time for many of us, we will be unfettered.

We will continue to bring our sessions online through our newsletters sent every 1st and 3rd Wednsday of the month (susbscribe if you haven't!)

Our team will also be working, reinventing on ways we can support each other through other means and platforms.

Meanwhile, keep yourself well hydrated, boost your immune system and be mindful in the information you seek and receive during this period.
It's normal to be scared and anxious in times of uncertainty.
But do know that you are not alone.
During this period, make time to reach within you and beyond you.
A community thrives when hearts are together towards a common goal.
For now that goal would be for us each to do our part to pull through this period.
Be kind to you.
Be kind to others.

We will get through this, growth warrior! 💚

*MARCH’S GROWTH TABLE PROJECT*

“ I’ve come to accept a lot of the different sides of me, though I’m still learning to love them. Embracing there are many parts of me allows me to not restrict myself to only one role or one type of person. When I am open to accepting that of myself, I get to experience so much more beautiful things in life. I believe in investing in myself, my growth and my happiness. They’re important to me.” -

Back in January, our growth warriors had a chance to step into the shoes of a professional boxer for a day, this time, we’ll get to experience a day as an independent illustrator!

Listen to Nisa’s story from the point she started illustrating, the obstacles she’s faced as a creative, her proudest moments and all the lessons she’s come to learn from those experiences and how she has grown as a person and as a Creative. In this interactive session, you’ll also get to ask Nisa’ anything about her journey, tips and also tricks in the trade, all while enjoying good home cooked food. Lastly, Nisa’ will be guiding us through an illustration activity, one that you’ll be able to keep with you after!

*UPDATE: 4 SPOTS LEFT ONLY!*

*FEBRUARY’S COMMUNAL CREATIVE SESSION*

In this expressive painting session, we will be focusing on the theme: Memories

“We use our minds not to discover facts but to hide them.” Antonio Damasio

“Art makes the invisible visible.” Paul Klee

Our memory is an active and constructive process, our minds constantly re-assembles old impressions and attaches them to new information. In this painting session, we will explore the concept of past memories and how it manifests and guides our reactions and behaviours in the present. Experience the mediums : ink and watercolour; intentionally chosen for its fluidity, lightness and permanence. Just like our memories; seemingly fleeting, yet constant and leaves a mark in our lives.

We had our first ever walk last Sunday at McRitchie Reservoir; an initiative we started this year to walk as a form of practicing mental wellness.

This initiative came from the ladies in our community whom often lamented that “I wished I could just get up and walk but the thought of actually doing it is overwhelming” “I really want to get out and be active but I have no motivation doing it alone” “I’m too busy to walk, I have kids and work and so many other things on my list!” and they wanted change.

So we thought, well why not just walk together?

And we did! Super mighty proud of our right here some of which are familiar faces and some coming for the first time for an A&C event.

Special shout out to and for being super trooper volunteers and ensuring our group was well taken care of. Not forgetting for offering dates and tissue to anyone who needed it.

We’re only left with 2 spots for Feb’s walk and if you’ve signed up, you would have already received a confirmation email from us and all the other details you will need.

If you’d like to join us for Feb’s walk, click the Sole Sisters Walking Club link in our profile 💚

*THE GROWTH TABLE PROJECT*

“When I decided to pursue professional boxing full time, everyone had something to say about it. They told me that female boxers won’t go far in this sport. And up till today, being a trained professional boxer and head coach, people still continue to doubt me simply because I am female, and they can’t wrap that idea in their head, but I’m still here and living proof that if you do it right and with right intentions, with focus, you can achieve anything you want. It’s all up to you to decide what do you really want for yourself ”

- Efasha Kamarudin

GTP is back and how better to kick off the year learning and experiencing what it’s like to be a professional female boxer in Singapore.
theface ‘s story is an important one to tell, from making a career switch being a teacher to pursuing boxing full time, the challenges and the stereotypes she’s had and still face today being a female athlete. Step into her shoes for a day and experience an introduction to boxing.

Session will be held Balestier’s where Efasha is the head coach. This session is pregnant women friendly. We only have a few spots left for this one! Sign up by clicking the GTP link in our profile.

For those coming on Sat, please come in sports attire, covered sports shoes and your water bottle! @ Singapore

02/01/2020

It was hard to pick one highlight moment for A&C in 2019 because every session, every embrace, tears, laughter, stories and truths, success and failures shared were all experiences that matter and were and still is important.

But there was one moment during our Light Within Me Retreat in April last year, during our trek when I saw our ladies laughing, smiling, laughing at themselves and each other when they slipped and fell, waiting on and supporting each other made me realized that while the journey ahead is uncertain and certainly won’t be smooth sailing, it’s always to early give up the fight and that wherever we are being placed, we’re rightfully being placed there and have all the tools we need within us + learning that there are people around whom we can seek help and accept help from. It’s been quite a journey of four years running A&C. We’ve watched people come and grow, witness ladies at their lowest and also through major life milestones. We’re excited for what’s to come in 2020 but we’re not going to rush growth and squeeze growth into templates.

“Take your time to journey in grace” is our mantra for 2020. There is no rush in growth. You’re allowed to take your time and make meaning of your experiences. If you’ve been struggling with the new year, swipe left to read 💚

*COMMUNITY BRUNCH TALK*

Sharing with you our last community brunch for the year 2019 and this time, we’re switching things up a little different! For this special session, we will be creating a safe space for each of us to honour our journeys thus far, we have also lined up a few meaningful activities that will guide us into understanding and making peace with failures and regrets and also setting in intentions for the new year. Nope, this won’t be the all-so-positive in your face kinda session, I promise. It will be real, honest and sometimes uncomfortable (if you’ve joined us for brunch talk before, you’ll know this!) but you will also be allowed space to explore, reflect and listen to your needs and inner voice that may have taken second place because 2019 happened and you needed to do what needed to be done, and THAT IS REALLY OKAY. This special brunch session is to facilitate you an opportunity to not just do, but be. Not to just chase bigger growth but to appreciate the baby steps, the adjustments, the new and unfamiliar roles/responsibilities and experiences to come.

As usual, it will be casual, a small intimate group and a warm homemade brunch will be served (hint: we’re making something a little extra special!)🎉

This would also mark our 4 years of running Asha&Co and 3 years since we first shared Brunch Talk with the world.
It’s been a one hell of a learning curve but we will continue to embrace learning and gentleness towards ourselves, embracing progress over perfection, supporting and empowering women towards living healthier and meaningful lives 💚

Spots are limited. Event is pay as you wish, always 💚 Details plus sign up link in our profile 🌱
