ARTS FISSION

ARTS FISSION Contemporary dance company in Singapore since 1994

The Arts Granary : art+dance enrichment program

A Contemporary Dance Company in Singapore since 1994, Arts Fission pioneered site-specific dance performance in Singapore, and is still the leading force in extending dance performance beyond the confine of conventional stage. The company has presented dance works regionally and internationally. Arts Fission not only delves into inquisitive dance work with creative fervor, but applies equal innova

tion to turning community outreach project into richly human experience. The Arts Granary and Everyday Waltzes are movement programmes/ workshops for the younger and elder generation respectively as we strongly believe that dance is for all and it is the expression of the human.

THE GREAT TREASURE HUNT
Imagine digging a ditch in your land and discovering priceless treasure? This was exactly what happened to a farmer back in 1927 in the village of Sanxing at Sichuan, China.

The archaeological find of a 3000 years old ancient kingdom and its relics known as Sanxingdui (translated as three star mounds) rocked the world! Part of the cultural relics was presented in Singapore at the Asian Civilisations Museum back in 2007. Since the first unearthed artefact of Sanxingdui, Chinese archaeologists continue to uncover more and more relics even till recent times in the 2000s.

The Sanxingdui artefacts took our breaths away and prompted us to create our own archaeological performance named AMAZING BEASTS AND BOTANICALS. Can’t wait to share more about our performance.

Our show at Singapore Chinese Culture Centre (SCCC) will be presented on 26 and 27 July.
EARLY BIRD is on till 30 June. So book your ticket NOW!

What’s Coming Down?
Something not quite your normal show is happening soon. Together with the dancers, Sculptor Yeo Chee Kiong, Composer Chua Jon Lin and Artistic Director Angela Liong are deep in discussion during their recce session.

Of course dancers being dancers, they’d never leave the stage without doing their thing. More to release in the next few weeks.

WHEN NATURE SIGHS
Today there’s another Zaobao news article about the music making of Imagine Ocean, the dance film.

Joyce Beetuan Koh the composer of the film took the road less travelled and made a bold creative choice in scoring the soundtrack. She flew to Japan with the film crew and gathered raw sounds on site while filming was taking place.

Waves, sands, winds, and familial everyday sounds are morphed into the life breaths of nature, all strung together by the ethereal echoes of a single bell. And whoever would think of using the mating calls of s***m whales to intensify the emotional duet in the film? Soupy nostalgia violin is so last century and passé, darling!

ON THE FRONT COVER
Artistic Director Angela Liong was featured in the cover page of Fu-kan 副刊 on April 1 — the arts and culture section of Chinese Press ZAOBAO 联合早报. The title caption of the feature interview loosely translated as “Never-ending Dance in Reflections.”

The interview marks her creative foray into dance films where a new cinematic dance language is evolving for the camera. The article also pays tribute to her past diverse body of works with Arts Fission. These included pioneering site-specific dance performance in Singapore to bring dance to everyday places and people, as well as designing innovative movement-based arts outreach projects especially for the wellbeing of the senior community.

We received some warm and enthusiastic comments for Imagine Ocean under the festival programming of La Nuit du courton (the night of the shorts) at leFIFA. The festival writeup of Imagine Ocean introduces the film as “Initially straightforward, it evolves into an evocative, profound film showcasing our intricate relationship with the ocean and Earth.”

Ms Brisebois Director of Programming of art films appreciates the sensitive treatment of the film elements in Imagine Ocean that embodies a very poetic dimension. One audience member commented how the dance didn’t happen for the sake of just dancing but organically weaved into the sounds and sights of the film with no dialogue. Others enjoyed the performance of the Arts Fission Dancers (Aisha, Andine, Cymone, and Marveen) who displayed some strong dance prowess.

For both Angela and Joyce who attended the festival, it has been a memorable experience for them to be among informed film-goers and appreciative art lovers at leFIFA.

It was a warm gathering of the local and world premiere of our film, IMAGINE OCEAN at the ACM auditorium on 02 March. The audience were kept riveted with the sounds and sights of the film locations in Japan.

The next leg of the film screening would be its International premiere at the International Festival of Films on Arts (leFIFA) next week at Montreal, Canada!

Both artistic director Angela Liong and sound designer Dr Joyce Beetuan Koh will attend the eminent festival opening event in the city of Montreal on 14 March. One exciting wave after another indeed!

ONLY IF THEY CAN SPEAK

The set of BIRDS•UNSUNG expresses the unspeakable beauty of wabi sabi — the raw n unfinished essence of material things around us.

A Torii gate constructed of red painted branches n bamboo poles, draped with dangling silk-cord tassels.

Then there’s the tree trunk on the floor— too huge n quiet to be ignored when audience first entered into the dimly lit Black Box theatre.

Wish you were here to see this magical sphere!

MOONSTRUCK!
It was the perfect opening night.
Dramatic live music and dance with fantastically designed costumes, and a full moon above the trees.

The performing debut of the seniors and children with their genuine expressions – supported by professional dancers and musicians, won the hearts of the large crowd of audience at the Yishun Pond Park Promenade.

Here are some glimpses of Moon Rabbits. We’ll return a little later with more great shots by photographer Koh Beng Chye. But now the twitters from BIRDS.UNSUNG are coming closer. So stay tuned!

Echos of the Flower Moon

The EDM poster of our 2022 Mid-Autumn Festival performance (by visual designer Joyce Ng) at the historic Cavenagh Bridge can still be seen here and there at some of the MRT stations! We are glad the image of dance and bridge can serve as a little poetic reminder for busy city people to slow down their pace.

Stick around! Soon we will be sharing the new site for this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival performance.

Geometry Hidden Around Us

The elegant precision of geometry is indicative of contemporary urban architecture. But even in our heritage Cairnhill Arts Centre building, you can also spot razor sharp angles and symmetry in the stairs and landing between floors.

The series of photos taken inside the arts centre speaks succinctly of the beauty of mathematics. Go check out our dance film MATH INSPIRED DANCES* presented in the master-class format.

The series of three different short films engages the audience to look at Math from the dance perspective. There’s also an interactive segment you can try with family or friends to pick up some creative brain juice!
