Posted • CHARITY GALA 2024 | This year’s Charity Gala was truly a special one. We introduced the Smile Asia Philanthropic Visionary Award, which was instituted to honour inspirational leaders who have made substantial philanthropic contributions, significantly improving the lives of communities through various charitable initiatives. The recipients of this award would have had notable collaborations with Smile Asia, allowing us to witness their excellent work firsthand.

The inaugural award was presented to Her Majesty the Queen Mother of Bhutan, Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan. We were deeply honoured that Her Majesty graciously accepted the award in person.

With her Majesty’s blessings and steadfast support through her established Tarayana Foundation, we have successfully organised six medical missions to Bhutan, providing comprehensive evaluations for 504 children, with 231 of them benefitting from life-changing surgeries.

Mebar Tsho, or the "Burning Lake," is like the magical spot in Bhutan's Bumthang Valley where history meets legend. The lamp was still burning!

Have you visited Mebar Tsho to catch a bit of that legendary magic?

Amber, a happiness agent, travels the Bhutanese Himalayas surveying people's happiness. On his remote mountain journey, he searches for fulfilment.

How can you measure happiness? The country of Bhutan invented Gross National Happiness to do just that, and Amber is one of the agents who travels door to door to meet people and measure how happy they really are. He is still living with his elderly mother at the age of 40, but is nevertheless a hopeless romantic who dreams of finding love: a happiness agent who is in search of his own happiness. We embark with Amber on a cross-country road trip meeting citizens from all walks of life, reminding us of the fragility and beauty of our own happiness. No matter where we live.
