As we lament the closure of the 162 yr old Robinsons store, do you know that person who started and lent his namesake to the store is also a Christian church pioneer?

Spicer & Robinson was established on February 25, 1858 by Philip Robinson. He inaugurated the Brethren work in Singapore at 108 Bencoolen Street (called the “Mission Room”) on 3 July 1864. As the early assembly at Bencoolen Street grew, believers moved to new premises at 77 Bras Basah Road in 1866. This became known as Bethesda Bras Basah which later moved to Ang Mo Kio after the government acquired its land.

The last 2 Robinsons store will be closing soon.... but Philip Robinson's legacy lives on with the 12 Bretheren churches in Singapore.

ARMENIAN CHURCH (3 Part Series: 3/3)
-THE JAPANESE OCCUPATION-

The Armenian Church houses pews which date back to the Japanese Occupation. During the Japanese Occupation, looters stripped the church of items such as priest vestments and hymn/prayer books. The Japanese also used the grounds of the church as air-raid shelters.

ARMENIAN CHURCH (3 Part Series: 2/3)

-THE ARCHITECTURE-
The Armenian church was designed by G D. Coleman, who also designed the first St Andrews Church. Its design resembles the Mother Church of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Etchmiadzin in northern Armenia, featuring large Doric columns and a circle within a greek-cross plan. The church interior has a distinctive circular design which is not found in other churches in Singapore.

ARMENIAN CHURCH (3 Part Series: 1/3)

-THE HISTORY
Armenian church was completed in March of 1836, making it the oldest surviving church building in Singapore. It was built upon request by the local Armenian community who raised half of the building’s construction costs.

The Armenians were one of the earliest merchants and traders to arrive in Singapore after it became a British trading port in 1819. There are a number of notable members of the Armenian community who have left their mark on Singapore history. For instance, Catchick Moses the co-founder of The Straits Times and Agnes Joaquim, who bred the orchid hybrid Vanda Miss Joaquim - Singapore’s national flower.

The Armenian church memorial garden holds the tombstones (but not actual graves) of the 2 influential Armenians.

CATHEDRAL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD: (3 Part Series: 3/3)

- THE RESTORATION -
In 2006, it was reported that the church building had cracks which caused tilting even though it was still certified as safe. 3 years later, support beams had to be added to the bell tower which had started to tilt. Evidently, the old church was falling apart as it weathered overtime, thus, the church decided to undergo renovations to rectify the structural issues of the building.

The renovation process which started in 2013, was a 3-year-long $40 million project guided by conservation specialists. It was a meticulous task involving careful dismantling of delicate stain-glass panels and the restoration of Singapore’s oldest pipe organ. As such, the cathedral was conferred an Honourable Mention in the 2017 UNESCO Asia Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

Thank you for the overwhelming support. Our second session of the Virtual Christian Heritage Trail to be conducted via zoom tomorrow (Sat, 25 July 2020) is fully registered.

Details of the next session will be released soon.

CATHEDRAL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD: (3 Part Series: 2/3)

- THE ARCHITECTURE -
By 1847, the Cathedral was built in a Renaissance style, with a traditional cruciform plan and Roman Doric Pillars. The architecture was designed by Denis L.McSwiney and it was inspired by two well-known churches in London: Saint Paul’s Church in Covent Garden and Saint-Martin-in-the-Fields at Trafalgar Square.

What is a Cruciform plan?
Cruciform means taking the shape of the cross. Early churches in Western Europe were commonly described to have cruciform architecture as the floorplan of the church resembles the shape of a cross.

What are Doric Pillars?
The Doric Column was invented in ancient Greece, it can be found in the ruins of buildings in Greece and Rome. For example, the Parthenon in Greece is an iconic example of Doric column style.

CATHEDRAL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD: (3 Part Series: 1/3)

- THE HISTORY -
The Cathedral of the Good Shepherd is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Singapore, it was built between 1843 to 1847. The very first Catholic chapel was a wood-and-attap construction built in 1832 located where the Singapore Art Museum is today. In 1843, a French Priest, Jean-Marie Beurel convinced the government to provide the Catholic mission with the plot of land where the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd still stands today.
