St Helena is experienced with all the senses.
It’s the taste of herby goodness – the basis of every great Saint meal, the sweetness of island fruit, and the freshness of sustainably caught fish straight from the sea.

The month of May in St Helena was a vibrant celebration of our island's spirit.

Throughout the month, we celebrated what makes St Helena so special with a variety of cultural events. St Helena’s Day was one of the highlights when the tight-knit community came together for a street party in the capital, Jamestown. Filled with food, music and community spirit.

We hope you can experience the magic of St Helena for yourself someday.

The island’s natural beauty and vibrant culture are experienced through every sense, creating lasting memories for those fortunate enough to visit. One of the most enchanting aspects is the soundscape of St Helena. The rhythmic sound of waves lapping against the shores offers a soothing backdrop to daily life, complemented by the lively buzz of "Saints" (as the locals are known) exchanging warm greetings on the historical streets.

PROSPEROUS BAY BEACH POST BOX WALK

The coastal hiking trails on St Helena require a good level of fitness and, often, a head for heights on the narrow pathways that snake around the steep hillsides.

However, the views along the way are generally quite spectacular and make it all worthwhile. Like this halfway point, on the long trek down the valley, to Prosperous Bay Beach, one of the island’s 21 ‘post box’ walks.

From the starting point on the airport road, reaching Prosperous Bay involves a 380m descent to sea level. The climb back up is obviously quite sapping on the energy reserves. Be sure to take a sun hat, plenty of water and make time for rest stops.

St Helena, a remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean, offers an experience that truly captivates and enchants. It’s the sights of jagged volcanic ridges, bright-green, fern-covered peaks, and the sparkle of the blue ocean stretching out to the horizon, all visible from one vantage point.

The Celebrating St Helena competition aims to enhance the record-base of St Helena’s modern culture, and preserve stories and memories that are alive within our community today.

Submissions are open to island residents aged 18 and over, and may focus on topic(s) relevant to St Helena’s living memories and culture, as they exist today in 2024.

Entries could capture a favourite old yarn of a friend or family member; could document how a location or thing has changed over time; could showcase the current day-to-day experience of living in St Helena; or anything in between.

The overall aim being to help create a small bank of information, to preserve a snapshot of St Helena today, for into the future.

PRESS RELEASE:

9 Months to go: St Helena gears up for iconic Cape to St Helena Yacht Race

JAMESTOWN, ST HELENA (March 27, 2024) – Just nine months remain until the starting gun fires for the iconic Cape to St Helena Yacht Race. Competitors have until 1 November to enter the challenging 1,700 nautical mile (3,060km) journey across the South Atlantic, with the race set to start on 26 December. This event offers a unique challenge and the allure of reaching one of the world's most remote inhabited islands.

The Cape to St Helena Yacht Race, originally known as the Governor's Cup, has a rich history dating back to 1996. Inspired by the Cape to Rio fleet in 1996, former RMS St Helena Captain David Roberts envisioned a race to the remote British Overseas Territory. His vision blossomed into the first Governor's Cup race later that same year.

The first race in 1996 attracted 13 entries, with the second edition in 1998 securing a record 22 entries. While the 2020 race was postponed due to the pandemic, the successful 2022 event heightened anticipation for the upcoming race.

Today, the race is a captivating blend of fierce competition and camaraderie. The 2022 race saw yachts battling intense weather, enduring heavy rains, high winds, and turbulent seas. Despite the challenges, the shared experience forged bonds between racers.

David Garrard, Vice-Commodore of the Royal Cape Yacht Club, says: “We’re excited to being part of this incredible event. And with just nine months to go, we are working closely with St Helena Tourism to stage this iconic yacht race. We look forward to a good fleet and sharing this tremendous event with the world.”

that Boer Prisoners of War first arrived in James Bay in April 1900?

In the days that followed they marched from Jamestown to Deadwood to a camp site filled with canvas tents, where they lived during their time on island.

You can still visit the site today which is now a great place to spot Wirebirds.
