Strengthening Regional Cooperation and Social Cohesion 🌍🤝✨

The first meeting of the Thematic Steering Group (TSG) for Pillar 5 – Improved Social Cohesion - was a vital step in advancing transnational cooperation and aligning strategies to promote inclusivity, innovation, and shared growth. 💡🌱

The meeting gathered representatives from EUSAIR countries, the European Commission, and key stakeholders to collaborate on initiatives aimed at fostering social cohesion across the Adriatic-Ionian region.

🚀 We look forward to continuing this momentum at the next TSG5 meeting in 2025 and the upcoming regional events. Together, we are building a more connected and cohesive Adriatic-Ionian region.

🌍 Greening and Holistic Approaches: The Future of Sustainable Tourism in Europe

The 24th meeting of the EUSAIR Thematic Steering Group on Sustainable Tourism, held in Durrës, Albania in November, emphasized the importance of aligning tourism with green and digital transitions to build resilience and foster innovation across the region.

With collaboration at the heart of our efforts, the meeting showcased how sustainable tourism can drive positive change by connecting culture, heritage, and agriculture.

POPRI made a strong impression at the EUSBSR Forum! 🌍✨

Lara Kodrin, who won Slovenia’s POPRI competition with her team for their Mobility Portal project and also participated in the Popri International Eusair Youth Competition, joined to share her experience and showcase the power of youth entrepreneurship.

From competitions to roundtable talks on cross-border cooperation, POPRI is inspiring young people to tackle real challenges and build a sustainable future. 💡🌱

🌊 The 9th Mediterranean Coast and Macro-Regional Strategies Week began on September 17 in the picturesque coastal town of Izola, Slovenia 🇸🇮.

💡 The event gathered over 250 participants to explore key topics such as the Post-2027 Cohesion Policy, circular economy, digitalisation, smart specialisation, soft skills, and sustainable construction both at sea and on land. These discussions foster collaboration, spark innovation, and create synergies that drive faster progress and generate higher added value for macro-regional cooperation. ✨

The week was officially inaugurated on Wednesday with a formal opening ceremony featuring high-level representatives from the Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development of Slovenia, the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovenia, the European Commission, and the Municipality of Izola. 🤝

Following the opening, a high-level political panel took place. Speakers Mr. Aleksander Jevšek, Slovenia's Minister of Cohesion and Regional Development 🇸🇮, Domagoj Mikulić, State Secretary of Croatia's Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds 🇭🇷, and Sławomir Tokarski, Director from DG Regio 🇪🇺 discussed the future of cohesion policy and the coordination of EU sustainable development programs across all four macro-regions.

🤝🌍 Embracing a more social and inclusive ! The 5th pillar—Improved Social Cohesion—aligns with the EU’s goal of fostering a socially inclusive Europe and offers opportunities for closer alignment with European social rights. This new pillar aims to tackle shared challenges like demographic shifts and economic disparities across the Adriatic-Ionian region.

The session Stronger Social Cohesion - a response to the challenges of the future at the 9th Forum discussed strengthening cooperation on labor market and social issues. They also highlighted that active civil society and youth involvement are key, with innovative approaches like "youth impact assessment" crucial for progress.

Investing in these corridors enhances eco-connectivity, cross-border collaboration, and biodiversity conservation, while integrating genetic diversity ensures long-term sustainability. Preparedness for oil spills and sharing best practices across the Adriatic basin are crucial for maritime protection.

🇬🇷 The Hellenic Republic assumed the Presidency of the .

They are adapting strategies to global, European, and regional trends, working closely with EUSAIR Participating states to strengthen cooperation within the Adriatic-Ionian Macroregion.

Here are their top priorities:
1️⃣ Supporting EU enlargement, especially in the Western Balkans.
2️⃣ Integrating Cohesion Policy post 2027 with the EUSAIR Strategy, emphasizing its spatial dimension.
3️⃣ Advancing the green transition and combating climate change impacts.
4️⃣ Developing the Blue Economy, focusing on skills, education, and specialized professions.
5️⃣ Promoting environmental protection and improving environmental quality.

🚆 During the 9th EUSAIR Forum in Šibenik, Croatia, the session on "Interoperable Rail Infrastructure and Services to Increase Connectivity in the Adriatic Ionian Region" addressed key challenges and opportunities for enhancing rail connectivity.

The discussion highlighted the importance of railway interoperability for economic growth and integration of transport networks to bridge the railway capacity gap in the Adriatic-Ionian Region. With new opportunities for connectivity and harmonizing rail transport regulations and standards to ensure safe and efficient services all over the region.
