Disabled are conquering the mountains again! In October another mountain peak (Mountain cottage in Gore) has been conquered during the INMountaineering (Inclusive Mountaineering) project "Together to the hills". Several dozen disabled (wheelchair users, people with hearing and visual impairments) with their families, volunteers and assistants met near Hrastnik and went for 3km journey up to the mountains! Everybody enjoyed this cool and noble event and once again showed that everything is possible with a strong will and a bit of enthusiasm!

Good news!! City municipality of Koper (largest town on the Slovenian seaside) from now on has a status - Municipality made (tailored) for the needs of the disabled! Except for the municipality administration also several groups of disabled helped Koper to get this noble status of a town which is inclusive and takes care of the needs of different kind of population, including of course the disabled ones.

Maribor had already been named the Best Culinary Destination in Europe in 2023. The portal also complimented the natural beauty of the Pohorje Mountains, which form a picturesque backdrop to the city and provide ample opportunity for outdoor activities.

Little bit about Slovene history and holidays. Today and Tomorrow - 31.10. and 01.11. we'll be celebrating two national holidays and days free from work.
31.10. we are celebrating the Day of the reformation, in the honor of deeds of founder of Protestantism - Martin Luther, more than 500 years ago. Although Slovenia is primarily a Roman catholic country, Protestantism is also a very important part of our history and tradition, as during the reformation period Slovenes got the first printed books in Slovene language. And language is something on which Slovenes primarily base their national identity.
01.11. we are celebrating the holiday called All Saints (or the Day of the dead). On that day Slovenes visit the graves of their loved ones (cause we usually don't visit them when they are alive 🙂 ). It is a very important day for Slovenes and although it has a religious connotation, it was holiday even in the socialist period of our history.
Many people took a few days of holidays (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) from work so they could combine it with two weekends and have 9 days of vacation and also children in schools are on holidays too. And it worst case 4 days free with 31st October (Thursday) and 1st November (Friday) and the upcoming weekend ;)

Although progress has been made in the last decade, unemployment of the disabled is still one of the biggest problems in Slovenia. Less than 4 percent of them are working actively and are fully employed. Most of the companies are very skeptical about employing people with disabilities. Upper Carniola region of Slovenia and town of Škofja loka have good experiences with workers with different kind of disabilities and they have organized a round table to discuss problems and solutions to this issue. Vojko from Slovenia and Stjepan from Croatia are disabled painters. Both are wheelchair users for several decades. Vojko is painting with his mouth and Stjepan with his legs. They showed their work to younger population, explained them how they became wheelchair users and showed them with a strong spirit and will everything is possible! Their works will be exhibited till the end of November in the Slovenian town of Dravograd. Video news is in Slovene language and more suitable for our Slovenian followers.

Slovenian state, city of Ljubljana and Paralympic committee of Slovenia (Union of sport of the disabled of Slovenia) have joined forces and decided to pay tribute to Slovene paralympians who competed in Paris this summer. In main Slovenian cultural institution - Cankar's Hall they organized a photo exhibition with the best Paralympic moments from French Capital. You can visit the photographic exhibition till 8th of December 2024.

Parents of children with special needs are emphasizing the problems they have and lack of personal assistants. Usually they need to do everything on their own and are asking for personal assistance with their children at least for a couple of hours per day. President of the National Assembly promised a half year practice project with which they would determine how to proceed further, but it has not started yet. Finally!! European Disability Card will be used in all 27 EU member states. It could be used before in 8 states including Slovenia but after all states agreed it should be universal, EU Council approved the decision and now disabled population wherever they will be traveling they have certain benefits in both public and private sector (museums, parking, sport activities, cultural events) in whole EU!

Most of the sports center in Slovenia are not adapted for the needs of the disabled. One of the few exceptions is a Spartacus gym in the town of Murska Sobota in Prekmurje region (North-eastern part of Slovenia). Jože and Andrej are in the wheelchair for several decades but are regular visitors of that sport gym. Ramps have been made especially for them and they say with the help of friendly staff they can enjoy fitness and similar activities just as everybody else.
