The statue of Slovak revolutionary poet Janko Kral, located on second side of river Danube. He was a member of revolutionary group “Štúrovci”. They fought for autonomy of Slovakia within Hungarian Kingdom. The nickname of Janko Kral was also “mighty Janko” thanks to his fierce temperament.

Have you ever heard of Halušky?

Halušky are the most traditional Slovak dish, especially popular in Northern Slovakia. They can be described as the Slovak version of gnocchi, made from potatoes, served with sheep cheese (called Bryndza in Slovak), and topped with bacon.

Originally, the dish Bryndzové halušky comes from Romania, brought to Slovakia by Romanian shepherds during the Wallachian Colonization in the 14th-16th centuries.

Halušky is a dish you can only truly taste in Slovakia, though you might find something similar in Czechia (but it’s not the original). Ukraine also has a dish called Halušky, but it’s quite different from the Slovak version.
