Comenius University in Bratislava

This building with a cylindrical façade was designed by architect František Krupka. Originally, it was intended for exchange services, the Danubian Shipping Companies, the Trade Commission, and the Provincial Archives. However, its purpose changed. After its completion in 1937, it became the home of Slovakia’s oldest and largest university, Comenius University, founded in 1919 and named after Johannes Amos Comenius.

Comenius University consists of 13 faculties, with the oldest being the Medical, Law, and Philosophy faculties. Several prominent figures have received honorary doctorates here, including Milan Hodža, Václav Havel, Simon Wiesenthal, the 14th Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso), and Angela Merkel.

A glimpse of Princess Stéphanie of Belgium at the iconic Café Štefánka .sk a renowned meeting spot for Slovak intellectuals during the First Czechoslovak Republic (1919-1938).

Princess Stéphanie, born into the illustrious Coburg dynasty, married Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria at the age of 15. Rudolf was the son of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Sissi, and heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. Unfortunately, their marriage was marked by tragedy, ending with Rudolf’s tragic death alongside his lover at Mayerling.

Later in life, Princess Stéphanie found love again, marrying a Hungarian nobleman. Although this union was not considered equal, leading her to lose her royal title, the couple lived happily in Rusovce, a district of Bratislava, where they were cherished by the local community.
