Did you know there are still a few lighthouses in the world that run completely by hand?

One of these rare gems is right in the Abacos! The Elbow Reef Lighthouse in Hope Town has a dedicated keeper who winds up its mechanism every few hours, just like they’ve been doing since the 1860s.

We climbed to the top and were rewarded with the most incredible views - all of Hope Town and endless turquoise waters stretching to the horizon. Those iconic red and white stripes have been guiding sailors through these waters since 1863.
