Oumar is a great guide that will go out of his way to ensure that you get the best experience ever! very trustworthy, punctual, optimistic, respectful, and reliable. As a solo female traveler, I felt safe and in good hands. He gives you a great insight into the local living and perspective of Senegalese people and has a good understanding of his country, not to mention his full passion and energy for this great land, Senegal, the land of beauty and hospitality. To start - Oumar was fantastic!! And I don't say that casually. He was a thorough gentleman, incredibly knowledgable, and has fluent English (which helps if one doesn't know an African language or has poor French). I had a very crazy, ambitious tour planned. Other guides laughed at what I wanted to do. Others quoted me double the price. Oumar explained that this was a difficult tour, but ways we could make it happen. THAT is customer service at an international standard! His vehicle was great also!

Oumar consistently exceeds expectations. On-time? Always. Good communication? Yes! Every morning, he discussed the day's itinerary with us and gave us a head's up about driving times. Oumar gave us the opportunity to modify the plan according to our interests and energy level. Fluent English? YES! (Oumar lived in the US for 10 years). Knowledgable? YES! Thanks to Oumar we have some understanding of history and current life in Senegal. I highly recommend a tour with Oumar.

Oumar is a high-energy and friendly tour guide. I liked that he was quick to give both his positive and negative impressions of Senegal. He speaks fantastic English and lived in the United States. Few people speak textbook French in Senegal - so this was very helpful. Oumar and his driver knew when to talk and when to leave us alone. He was quick to offer suggestions on most anything but flexible enough to change things based on our energy/preferences/time. I would highly endorse him

AFRICA: MISCONCEPTIONS AND MISREPRESENTATIONS
When most people in the West hear the word AFRICA, many imaginations and perspectives spring up. Misconceptions are commonplace in the West so much so that, the general narrative about Africa is one of poverty, feed the children, malnutrition to name a few. The media portrayal of Africa continues to be mostly negative. These reactions are from a lack of accurate information about Africa combined with the ignorance about the significance and the contributions that our African ancestors had had upon the World from a historical standpoint. The media is obviously one of the strongest impacts. News media, in general, tend to focus on the negative and not the positive. Y'all agree with me that bad news sells really well and Africa is no exception. Of course, there are many different and often positive stories to be told from Africa's diverse countries but, the continent has no microphone of its own on the global stage, no loudspeakers with which to tell its stories the way it wants them told. It has to wait in line hoping others lend it theirs from time to time. I believe it's time for Africa to be uplifted more often in the western media and we need to hear more about the other dimension of life for Africans, those who are not living in absolute poverty. There is knowledge in Africa, Humanity, Beauty, health, and wealth,. Wouldn't it be great sometimes to hear about these positive elements too. As a proud African, I sense it is my responsibility to live in a way that shows the World an Africa that is not often the case of hopelessness most people expect.

GOREE is not just about SENEGAL's History but it also belongs to the Diaspora. Goree is an exceptional testimony to one of the greatest tragedies in the History of human societies: The Slave Trade
Slaves were brought here against their will under inhuman conditions and suffering unspeakable abuse. A visit to the DOOR-OF-NO-RETURN will give you a real sense of why Goree is the most visited place in SENEGAL. Between the 15th and the 18th century, 15 to 20 million Slaves have transited through this door and 1/3 survived.
