Our friend, photographer Luis Gaspar, shares his experiences of his time with us in a very special place - Somaliland.

Located in the Horn of Africa, Somaliland proclaimed itself independent from Somalia in the early 1990’s and unlike the rest of Somalia, the self-declared country has largely avoided unrest:

Somaliland is still treated as a pariah by the international community and is not recognized as a separate state by the outside world. The main reason why the world is reluctant to accept Somaliland’s independence is that the UN still hopes for a peace agreement covering all of Somalia, and its other neighbours are wary of an independent Somaliland, fearing a potential ‘Balkanisation’ of the Horn.

Rock art in

Dhambalin rock-art site is a remarkable rock art site, situated about 100km east of Berbera, was unknown to the outside world until October 2007, when the archaeologist was persuaded to visit it by two residents of the nearby village of Beenyo.

It is the only such site in Somaliland where sheep are depicted, alongside wild animals including giraffe, lion, baboon, and even marine turtle.

There are also many human figures, clearly wearing headgear, holding a bow and arrow, and accompanied by dogs, in what appear to be hunting scenes.

A pair of pre-Islamic burial sites face the paintings, and while they are too modern to be associated with the artists, who lived 3,000–5,000 years ago, their presence might suggest that the paintings were held sacred by subsequent inhabitants of the area.

The site is unlikely to open to tourists until a landmine field en route has been properly cleared.

Is safe?
The Somaliland government is very keen to distance itself from its more infamous neighbor to the southeast. They go out of their way to make sure that Somaliland is safe in every way that Somalia is not. The result is that Somaliland is one of the safest places in East Africa. Don’t be put off by the fact that an armed guard is required – this is more for the government’s peace of mind than yours!

- What is there to see and do?

Plenty! As a region occupied – and influenced – by both the Ottoman and British Empires, Somaliland boasts an interesting history and an eclectic architectural heritage. The region has a history that stretches back long before any foreign invaders arrived on Somaliland shores. One of the highlights is undoubtedly Laas Geel – a network of caves featuring rock art that was painted onto the cave walls between 5000 and 12,000 years ago! Due to their location, the paintings are excellently preserved and remain as colourful and vivid as ever. The caves are located on the outskirts of Hargeisa and are included on any trip to Somaliland.

The Hargeisa War Memorial is also well worth your time – check out the downed MiG fighter jet that forms part of the memorial, and learn more about the country’s vicious battle to flee itself from neighbouring Somalia.

Also very much worth checking out in Hargeisa are the gold and camel markets, where you’ll see the locals haggling over dromedaries and precious metals!

Explore the coastal beauty of Somaliland's de jure second city of Berbera. With its beautiful coastline and eclectic architecture, Berbera is a sight like no other. It’s also a prime spot for snorkelling, with crystal-clear waters and a great temperature year-round. On the way from Berbera to Hargeisa, you can also make a pit stop in Ferdusa, the abandoned ruins of a city dating back to the 16th century.

Tell friends that you’re going to ,
and the reaction is quite likely to be one of condescending incredulity (‘You’re going where?’), at the very best, or of serious warnng (‘you are suicidal!’).

Whatever, Somaliland currently represents the Shangri-la for those who dare to
break the mould of conventional travel.
This is the road less travelled, and virgin territory for travelati. The country’s big draws? , about 50km from ; pristine
beaches – if all you want is to laze on immense, unspoiled stretches of white sand, will take your breath away; and divers in the know swear that the islands off , to the north, will one day be a mecca for divers. Sure, the landscape is far less arresting than in neighbouring , but the terrain is torturous enough to warrant a couple of decent hikes and a hatful of excellent views. Good news: for now, most of this cultural and natural wealth is accessible
to independent travellers. Go on, don’t be affriad - Discover!

- Oldest Rock Art in Africa

The Laas Geel shelters feature polychrome painted panels that are considered to be some of the oldest known rock art in the Horn of Africa. The scenes depict human figures and animals painted in bright reds, whites, yellows, and sometimes black. In many cases, the human figures are shown with arms outstretched in postures that demonstrate reverence and perhaps even worship which may indicate the important status ascribed to cattle in this pastoral culture.
