The walking palm tree (Socratea exorrhiza), native to Central and South American rainforests, is renowned for its distinctive stilt roots, which have sparked myths about its ability to “walk” to sunnier spots. Some early theories suggested that these trees could move up to 20 meters annually by growing new roots toward light and allowing older ones to die off. 

However, scientific research, including studies by biologist Gerardo Avalos, indicates that while the stilt roots provide stability in swampy terrains and may help the tree adjust its growth direction, they do not enable actual movement. The main trunk remains stationary, and any perceived “walking” is a misconception. 

These stilt roots are advantageous for survival in unstable soils, allowing the tree to grow taller without a wider stem and to adapt to environmental changes like soil erosion. Despite the intriguing myths, the walking palm remains rooted in place, its “mobility” more fiction than fact.

Met veel trots kijken wij terug op succesvolle dagen voor ons educatie project in Boven Suriname! We hebben heel veel kinderen kunnen leren over de slangen van Suriname 🇸🇷

Want als een slang je buurman of buurvrouw kan zijn, is het handig om te weten welke gevaarlijk zijn en welke niet. Ook zal het je gevoel veranderen wanneer je weet waarom ze zo belangrijk zijn voor ons ecosysteem en wat ze allemaal kunnen🐍

Wij willen de Van Tienhoven foundation bedanken voor deze mogelijkheid en we kunnen niet wachten om volgend jaar terug te gaan! 💪🏽

FREDBERG | Nature can be full of surprises! Our trip to Fredberg almost turned up no wildlife, but on our way back, we were gifted with an incredible sight a large anaconda! 🐍
Always a humbling experience to see animals this big.
