Another successful venture to Turks and Caicos for #projectlemonaid, the lemon shark research and outreach project.
Always a pleasure to host @sharkeducation , no doubt once again the teamwork, inter-island collaboration and dedication makes this project a success. Thankful as well for the local expertise and support as it is also an indispensable key to this mission.
During these days of research, each shark undergoes data collection, followed by the insertion of a PIT tag before release. This involves taking three length and one girth measurements as well as a DNA sample.
It is crucial to note that all our research is carried out under the permission granted by the DECR.

On one of our outings in search of #jojothedolphin and the dolphins, we came across another great #wildlife treasure, one that we had not seen for months.
A large group of pilot whales cruising the waters off the north coast, ready to rest and accompanied by a perfect golden sunset.
There are two species of pilot whales, long-finned and short-finned; the latter found mainly in tropical and warm-temperate regions. With a thick, even more pronounced curved dorsal fin, adult males are easy to distinguish from females and juveniles. Can you tell the males from the females in this video?

Mother and Calf.
An absolutely amazing capture in the deep blue, filmed by our guide and captain, Mike while on charter. One of the best we have seen. It’s mind blowing how calm and relaxed they both are. These are the encounters we dream of….
Our humpback migration season is well and truly underway. Mothers and calves use the warm tropical seas to nurse as these new borns grow and build strength. Astonishingly mother humpbacks will produce over 80 gallons of rich, high fat milk PER DAY over the course of the calf’s first year. This enables the calf to grow as much as a foot per month in its first year alone.
Here in the tropics she will lose as much as one third of her body mass before she can replenish her fat reserves feeding up north.
