There may be trouble ahead. Even a rainy morning is special on Samui( Though quite rare most of year).

Morning harvest. This local lady and others are a regular morning site this time of year. Sitting at the tides edge, using their hands they dig about a foot of sand. Using their fingers as filters they let sand be washed away by the sea and harvest the shellfish they find burrowed there.

Theres quite a skill ive tried and not even got a quarter of their catch.

Even a small change can make a big impact!

How we reduced costs, increased service ,reduced our impact on the environment and raised a bit of awareness

When we started our villas, as part of the service we offered daily bottled water. Guests would also buy bottled water for the themselves. And when out buy water from local 7-11s.

We soon found we were using at least 200 single use large pet bottles a month. Our guests were using two to three times that. As we recycle this stood out.

We switched to local glass. This saved us stopped plastic use and saved us money But reduced service as guests didnt trust the look of the local bottles. It also led to further waste as guests bought even more pet bottles. And unfortunatly breakages happened. Near a pool a disaster.

Though it meant some capital outlay we invested in coolers for each villa. Immeadiatly we saw a major drop in plastic usage a large increase in water use and suprisingly our costs actually went down. The water for coolers is a much lower cost than bottles from shops. The containers are reusable and water is local.

One day we noted a guest filling a flask to take out.It was common sense but we hadnt thought of it.
As a result we invested in 6 insulated water carry bottles for each villa.

The result is guests now very rarely buy bottles from 7.11etc and get most water for free from us. Our water consumption is up but our costs are down. Coolers will pay for themselves in 1.5 years.Guests get unlimited drinking water. And by our estimates our main villas no longer (directly and indirectly) buy 5000-8000 single use bottles per year. We cant claim credit as we stumbled onto this solution. However imagine the impact if all holiday villas and Samui residents did this.

This mornings photo. Low tide.

Laem sor beach just near our villasOctopus fisherman looking for an early morning catch. Each caries a 2 metre long pole with a series of hooks baited with crab. They very slowly walk through the sea holding the pole so the crabs brush just over the seabed. Taken with android mobile.

Whilst doing my regular morning walk down Laemsor beach i made an effort to get a shot of fishermen throwing a net in the morning sun. i screwed up. Not only did i miss the net but i freaked the phone out(facing sun). Still quite happy how it turned out. What do you think?

What makes our villas special?
No special outdoor shots here just aspects of our villas.

With over 100 guests over the last 12 months and a remarkable 100 percent satisfaction rating, we wanted to know why our guests love our villas so much?
The answers were not quite what we expected. We actually thought price would be number 1. We were wrong!
1st was our approach to customer care. 2nd was the little details.3rd was the hideaway aspect to our locations. However the overall concensus of all our guests was as follows .
What makes South Samui villas special to our guests is that they are not just houses for rent they are homes you want to live in. Details count.
Where are you making your home in Samui for your next holiday? @ Baan Suaan Serenity

Feeling lazy after local breakfast........hmmm

Coco...nuts! Samui is very famous not just for its beautiful beaches and lush tropical climate but also for its origins as a coconut plantation. With up to 15 million coconuts per year being harvested at its peak. When you consider a tree produces approx 80 coconuts per year thats urm.......lots and lots of trees! Known as a drupe(fruit, nut and seed in one) Asian cultures not only consider this as a drink and food source but also a potent cure for nausea, rash, fever and more. In fact we will write a blog on this very soon. For sure If this local shopper is any indication Samui residents and island guests will remain well refreshed. # samui
