A tropical paradise home to palm tree laden sandy beaches, emerald green waters, and host of natural sites and activities, it’s no wonder that Koh Samui has become one of Thailand’s most popular destinations. Located in the Gulf of Thailand off the north-eastern coast of Surat-Thani province, Koh Samui is accessible via car ferry or passenger boat from Don Sak Tatong, or Bandon pier in Surat-Thani, or via the Lompraya Catamaran, which leaves from Chumpon, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao. Visitors wanting to cut down on travel time can choose to take a flight to Samui’s Intentional Airport (USM). Flights to Samui are limited, however Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways run daily flights from Bangkok, there are also several other daily flights arriving from Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Once on the island accommodation and cuisine can be found to suit everyone’s tastes and budget, the hardest part will be selecting where you want to stay and from where you’re going to eat. Every style of accommodation from five-star rooms to beach villas, bungalows, and cheap guest-house can be found on the island. There are number of upscale restaurants and hundreds of mid-range eateries all serving a mixture of European, Thai and fusion food. There are also fresh markets and convenience stores located in the island busier districts. Whilst there is certainly no shortage of places to stay, advanced booking is always recommended to avoid disappointment, especially around in the peak holiday season. Samui’s most vibrant place to stay is the bustling beach town of Chaweng on the island’s eastern coast. This is Samui’s most developed area, which boasts a melting pot of luxury hotels, backpacker guest-houses, restaurants, bars, spa’s, market stalls and shops. Just south of Chaweng sits the slightly less busy, but equally attractive beach of Lamai. Once geared more toward the backpacker crowd, there are now a number of upmarket resorts and restaurants popping up year by year. Nestled in amongst the points of the northern coast are the secluded and quite beaches of Leam Yai, Maenam and Choeng Mon. Also making up the island’s north coast is the fishing village of Boh Phut and Bang Rak or Big Buddha Beach – a nickname owed to the large golden statue of Buddha that sits overlooking the shores. The southern coast is also home to several quaint and quite beaches; Thong Krut, Bang Kao, Leam Set, Na Kahi, and Ban Hua Thanon. The town of Nathon and the bay of Taling Nam make up the island’s west coast. This is where Samui’s main ports and piers are located. Other destinations around Samui island make it an ideal location for island hopping. For the party animal Koh Pha-ngan, home to the world famous full moon parties, is just a 30 minute boat ride; for scuba divers Koh Tao and Ngan Yuan, two locations known for boasting some of the Thailand’s best dive spots, is just a further 30 mins ride; and also boasting year-round diving spots, as well as some of Thailand’s most pristine untouched nature, the stunning Angthong Marine National Park is less than 2 hours away. With a slightly different rainy season from the rest of the country, Samui is great to visit from late December through till September. And thanks to the island’s seemingly endless amount of choices when it comes to accommodation, cuisine, nature and activities, Koh Samui is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the country.
