Do you know why tea is plucked by hand?

Tea is harvested mainly by hand because it preserves the quality of the leaves. Machines were used for many years, but tea growers found they were too rough and damaged the delicate tea leaves. Harvests typically occur twice per year. The first harvest is known as the 'first flush' and occurs each spring.

In Surathani our group brought a visit to a local family business that run a rubbertree plantage. The southern part of Thailand is well known for the rubber tapping of its trees.

Since rubber was first introduced to Thailand in the early 1900s, the country has grown to become the world's number one producer and exporter of natural rubber due to its tropical climate as well as effective and advanced cultivation methods.

Rubber tapping is not damaging to the forest, as it does not require the tree to be cut down in order for the latex to be extracted. Jungle rubber is essentially old secondary forest, strongly resembling the primary forest. Its species' richness is about half that of the primary forest.

Rubber is durable, and more eco-friendly than plastic. It lasts longer, and stands up better against heat and cold than plastics.

LOY KTRATHONG FESTIVAL.

Planning to celebrate the Loy Krathong festival today on November 27? If so, try floating an eco-friendly krathong this year.

Loy Krathong – which originated from the Sukhothai Kingdom around 800 years ago – celebrates the end of the rainy season and “floating away” bad luck. Some couples also view Loy Krathong as a Thai version of Valentine’s Day, and an opportunity to bless their relationship.

On the night, families and loved ones come together to release krathongs (lotus-shaped floats or baskets decorated with banana leaves, flowers, incense and candles) in rivers, lakes, the sea, and canals..Many krathong bases are made from Styrofoam.

Given the volume of krathongs floated on the night however (more than six million in Bangkok alone), the Styrofoam ones get stuck in waterways and sewers and don’t break down..So, here are some Loy Krathong tips to help preserve our planet and waters for the long term. Please look out for vendors selling greener, biodegradable krathongs.

We suggest you to purchase, or use krathongs made from leaves or ice; or from ice cream cones or bread garnished with flowers and more..There are also ways to send digital krathong wishes – this year, be part of the move from traditional krathongs to green, or digital ones, to ensure that this beautiful tradition can be enjoyed for many years to come

Bamboo rafting in Khao Sok Village
While the guide paddles you over the river, you can just sit back and enjoy the breathtaking views. Floating down the river, some wildlife can be seen like families of gibbons, frogs and even snakes curled up high in the trees.

Half way through the trip, there is a coffee break where the local guides will make fresh coffee in cups made from bamboo.

Just an hour and a half drive from Hua Hin lies Kuiburi National Park – it’s an absolute gem for anyone who is into nature and the outdoors.

Renowned as one of Thailand’s premier destinations for witnessing wild elephants, the park is currently experiencing a surge in wildlife activity, making it an ideal time for locals, expatriates, and tourists in Hua Hin to visit and enjoy what is likely to be a memorable trip away from the usual beach attractions.

The park’s closure in June 2023 for ecological restoration has yielded significant benefits. Since its reopening in July, there’s been a noticeable increase in wildlife, particularly along the tourist paths, a phenomenon attributed to the onset of winter.
