What is a Khantoke Dinner?

A khantoke is a traditional Thai Lanna lunch or dinner offered to guests to celebrate any number of occasions. They can be smaller gatherings enjoyed at home, or they can be more grand affairs celebrating annual festivals like Loy Krathong and Songkran (Thai New Year).

The term khantoke specifically refers to the round pedestal tray used as a dining table during the meal. There are two types of khantoke, the Yuan khantoke and the Lao khantoke. The former is made of teak wood while the latter is made from bamboo strips and rattan woven together. The Yuan khantoke is predominantly used in Northern Thailand while the Lao khantoke is used in Northeast Thailand, Laos, and Sib Song Panna.

Traditionally, I believe khantoke meals are meant to be eaten entirely with your hands whilst sitting on Thai floor cushions. In an effort perhaps to make it more comfortable for tourists, our khantoke dinner at Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center was served with cutlery and the option to sit on regular dining tables.

One day Lisu Lodge Adventure
(Incl. Mountain biking, elephant riding and rubber boat)

Visitors will be transferred from Chiang Mai to Lisu Lodge.
A guide will be waiting to take visitors for 10 km of mountain biking to a small Thai village. Here you change the mode of transport to riding on elephants, and go upstream to an elephant camp.

Lunch is picnic style by the river.

Another change of mode of transport to a rubber boat and the true adventure begins downstream for 1½ hours, arriving at an Akha Hill tribe village to sample some Akha hospitality. Tea will be served here. Mountain bikes will be waiting for the journey back to Lisu Lodge.

Later transfer back to Chiangmai.

Visit the Elephant Camp (at Mae Taman or Mae Ping Camp) to see the 'Elephants at Work' show. You have a chance to ride the elephants crossing the river and into the forest. This lasts about 1 hour. Then return by oxcart to the elephant village followed by lunch. After lunch, enjoy a bamboo rafting adventure along the river, for around 45 minutes. Then, onwards to an orchid farm, where there are many beautiful species of orchid.

The Emerald Buddha is the most important Buddha image in Thailand. There are three different costumes of the Emerald Buddha, one of season, they are summer, rainy season and winter

The Emerald Buddha is the Buddha image which was carved from a block of jasper. The image itself measure 66 cms. high include the base and 48.3 cms. wide, in the attitude of meditation. Judging from the image’s style, the Emerald Buddha is of northern Thai workmanship and was probably made in 15th century, and regarded as the most important Buddha image in Thailand. There are three different costumes of the Emerald Buddha, one of season, they are summer, rainy season and winter. The first two seasons costumes were made in the reign of King Rama I and the last one for winter was made in the reign King Rama III, all made of gold and jewelry. The ceremony of changing the costume of the Emerald Buddha takes place three times a year, at the beginning of new season by the King.
