𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙞𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙??
Thailand’s popular for its tropical atmosphere and hot, steamy weather, yet sometimes the mother nature surprises us. During this month, people in Bangkok are swiping their flip-flops with fuzzy socks due to the unexpected temperature drop and cold breeze! Keep reading to find out what’s going on and how to make the most of this unusal change in weather.
𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙨𝙤 𝙘𝙤𝙤𝙡 𝙨𝙪𝙙𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙡𝙮?
Actually Thailand’s weather isn’t used to be as cool as now, but we are experiencing the most significant temperature shift in the last 40 years. In Northern areas like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, the temperature has declined to around minus 10°C. Even people in Bangkok are waking up to a chilly morning. But hey, would you complain about this little break from the heat, especially in Bangkok?
𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙤 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙮 𝙒𝙖𝙧𝙢 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘾𝙤𝙯𝙮
This shift in temperature may still catch us off guard even if you are not seeing snow in Bangkok. The following advices can help you stay warm and healthy in this season.
1. Layer up with Style
2. Drink plenty of water (Hot Drinks OFC!)
3. Make sure to use moisturizer
4. Be aware of sudden changes
5. Spend quality time with loved ones indoors
This sudden drop in temperature is surely a welcome break from Thailand’s usual humidity. So, stay warm, grab our favorite scarf and enjoy the cool breeze. Keep in mind that the secret to enjoy this wonderful weather is "𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛-𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚".
Moreover, you might notice the shift in air quality during these days as well, if not, you might have at least read the news about the air pollution in Bangkok getting worse, so together with sweaters, don’t forget to bring your N-95 masks with you.

🛎The Asian Research Center for Migration (ARCM) at Chulalongkorn University is hosting a dynamic 3-day symposium in conjunction with
the 2024 International Migrants Day, exploring migration challenges
tied to conflict, crime, care, and climate change. Our team join in the 3
days sessions. Here are some key takeaways from the three keynote
speakers:

🌿Mrs. Michiko Ito, Deputy Head of Operation at IOM Thailand,
emphasized how climate change is driving displacement across Asia-
Pacific. Yet, disasters like cyclones and floods also spark innovation
and resilience. Through initiatives like the Climate Mobility Innovation
Lab , IOM is finding solutions to crisis impacts. Notably, COP29
Azerbaijan acknowledged migrants’ vulnerabilities and established a
fund for loss and damage – a vital step forward.

🦺 Dr. Audrey-Anne Rochelemagne, Deputy and Acting Head of
Cooperation Section, Delegation at the European Union (EU) in
Thailand, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to protecting migrant
workers’ rights, especially women and children. Through initiatives like
PROTECT, the EU and ASEAN partners are improving labor migration
governance and tackling exploitation.

👩 Christine Arab, Regional Director of UN Women Asia and the
Pacific highlighted the heightened risks faced by women migrant
workers due to their gender and migration status, including
exploitation, violence, and trafficking. While ASEAN countries are
advancing protections through laws and the PROTECT initiative,
effective implementation is vital. Recognizing the humanity of migrant
workers is essential for building a more equitable world.

📣 Rapid Asia has partnered with International Labour Organization ,
IOM - UN Migration, UN Women and others, to advance the rights
and livelihoods of migrant workers across ASEAN and beyond.
Through impactful social research, we deliver results that translates
into real-world sustainable solutions.

📜 On December 13, 2024, the Rapid Asia team had the privilege of attending the launch of the Thailand Migration Report 2024 at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre (BACC). Organized by the UN Network on Migration in Thailand, the event highlighted the contributions of over 200 million migrants globally, while addressing the challenges they face, in celebration of 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 on December 18, today.

🔔 The Thailand Migration Report 2024, the 6th publication of its kind, provides a comprehensive overview of Thailand's migration landscape, achievements, and recommendations to enhance migration governance. Key themes included social protection, working conditions, human rights, and access to justice for migrant workers, alongside discussions on child statelessness, gender dynamics, and the impact of migration on Thailand's socioeconomic development.

🧤 The event brought together experts, including chapter authors, to share insights on critical issues such as improving social security for migrant workers, challenges in the fishing and seafood sectors, and advancing decent work for migrant domestic workers.

🌏 At Rapid Asia, we were excited to contribute ideas, drawing on our past and ongoing collaborations with the UN Network on Migration. It was an inspiring and insightful discussion, and we remain committed to supporting initiatives that promote inclusive migration policies and sustainable development in Thailand.

🎙 On December 3, 2024, Rapid Asia team attended the Eksil: Film Screening and Q&A Session at the BACC, Bangkok, presented by SEA-Junction in collaboration with director and producer Lola Amaria.

🛎 The event was followed by an insightful Q&A session, where Lola Amaria shared her vision and the powerful stories behind the film. Eksil explores the lives of Indonesian exiles who have been unable to return home for over 34 years due to political persecution, highlighting their experiences of statelessness, fear, and separation from their families.

🧠The discussion that followed brought to light the critical importance of citizenship rights and the long-lasting effects of political exile. It was a deeply thought-provoking session that prompted reflection on human rights, identity, and the resilience of those who have lived without a homeland.

🎀We are grateful to SEA Junction and Lola Amaria for hosting such a meaningful event and fostering a deeper understanding of these vital issues.

🎉 2025 is just around the corner. Here in Rapid Asia, we try to conduct weekly seminars as a learning opportunity for our staff. We call it
“Kanom-Kafe”.

☕ In the latest Kanom-Kafe, our Founder and CEO, Daniel Lindgren, discussed problem-solving, particularly the power of framing ‘problems’ into ‘challenges’.
Expanding upon the insights gained from Kanom-Kafe, today’s post aims to prepare us for 2025 and beyond by reflecting on the possible challenges that await humanity - the ones that could potentially
manifest in our lifetime.

Below we will discuss on the following global challenges: 👇
(1) 🌿𝙀𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 ☢️
🔹 There is less food, water and clean air available for everyone
🔹 Nuclear war remains a looming threat to humanity
(2) 👨‍🔧 𝘼𝙄 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 🦾
🔹 Computer programs and robots could make humans redundant.
🔹 Privacy may no longer be the default
(3) 👩‍❤️‍👩 𝘿𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙧 🗞
🔹 Personal values may have to be re-evaluated in a rapidly changing world
🔹 With the availability and accessibility of information, distinguishing between facts and fictions can be challenging.
🔹 Despite the physical comforts of the modern world, loneliness and despair sucks the life out of many people.

💡 These challenges are universal and complex. They require global, regional, national, and local efforts going in synchrony with one another. Rapid Asia has always been at the fore-front of generating evidence for real-world transformative solutions.

🎄 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 🎅

☃️ The temperature is dropping. The weather is becoming chilly.
It is the perfect time of the year to spend time with your loved ones or give yourself a break from the chaotic Bangkok city life.
Here are some activities that you might want to try out this winter holiday.

1. 𝘼 𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙛𝙪𝙡 𝙚𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙗𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙨 🏖️

Thailand’s winter will greet you with a chilly breeze that will cool you off under the sunshine and ease your sleep during the night. And at this time of the year, you won't get sunburn that much.
So, is there a better time than now to go relax on tropical beaches?
Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, or Krabi are welcoming you with powdery, soft, white sand, a cool breeze on your shoulder while gentle waves lap at the shore.
You can go snorkeling, diving around the vibrant coral reefs, enjoy the sunset, and then when it gets dark, you can also dig in the traditional BBQ and soup, Mookrata, that will warm your soul all night.

2. 𝙉𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙨 🏔️

However, if you are not feeling sandy shores, then northern Thailand might interest you with chilly mountain breezes and misty mornings.
Chiang Mai is the designated town for a dreamy escape to wander around the jungles or for outdoor activities such as zip lining across the trees, camping trips, trekking, or even visiting elephant sanctuaries. You can also visit Doi Inthanon National Park, or take a day trip to the twin pagodas for Instagram-worthy pictures.

3. 𝙀𝙭𝙥𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙡𝙚𝙚𝙥𝙨 🏙️

For a city like Bangkok, there is nothing that will make you get bored. Indoors or outdoors, you name it. There’s everything for everyone.
Now is the perfect weather to have a picnic in the park or even enjoy nature in the heart of the busy city. Lumphini Park and Benjakitti Park are waiting for you.
For your friends’ hangout spot, you can go to the theater, museums, karaoke rooms, and escape rooms or wellness center, spa, and hot springs for a girls’ day. You can even get in touch with wildlife, sea or land: SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World and Safari World just outside the city.

4. 𝘾𝙤𝙯𝙮 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚 🏡

If you’re not feeling the spirit to go outside and do outdoor activities, you can still have the best time while staying cozy at home. Here are some of the ways to have the most fun holiday at home (of course, this might save you some money as well). You can check out these activities in the following content.

Whether you want to dance at the beach party, hike through the lush mountains, do fun activities in the heart of Bangkok, or even chill at a spa, Thailand has them all for you. So, what are you waiting for?? Go make some unforgettable December memories in this land of smiles.

And of course, don’t forget to take pictures—your Instagram feed is going to love those! 📷

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐨-𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐠’𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫?

His name is TONY.

Tony is a natural born lover, who married Jonah and had many kids with her. One of which is Moo-Deng, a pygmy hippopotamus that captivates the attention of human beings with its chubby face, playful vibes and a mixture of mild narcissistic traits and an avoidant attachment style.

Moo-Deng might have some daddy issues.

If only Tony had worked at Rapid Asia, he would have been entitled to a ONE MONTH of paid paternity leave. However, we only accept humans with their names written on a piece of paper that they paid thousands of dollars for and took four years to get.

Things would have been different for Moo-Deng had Tony helped Jonah to raise her but instead his employer did not protect and fulfill his rights as a father like what we do here in Rapid Asia.

Now Moo-Deng probably needs therapy.

Rapid Asia is a signatory of the Paternity Leave Pledge in 2022. We know how important it is for fathers to be there for their family.

😷 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐦𝐨𝐠: 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐤𝐨𝐤'𝐬 𝐀𝐢𝐫 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬 😷

Over the past years, Bangkok's air quality has reached alarming levels, with PM2.5 pollution consistently exceeding national and international standards. The annual average particulate pollution in Thailand has been increasing over the past few years.

👨‍⚕️ This persistent issue poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

❓ What are the main causes?
The city's heavy reliance on diesel-powered vehicles and industrial activities is a major contributor to the problem. According to the emission inventory of Bangkok Metropolitan region, the main sources of PM2.5 are from on-road transportation (73%) and industry (17%).

🤕 The impact : silent killer
The health consequences of air pollution are far-reaching, including respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and increased mortality rates. Seasonal factors, such as crop burning in northern Thailand, further exacerbate the situation. And more than 1.3 million have already fallen ill due to air pollution in 2023 alone. Additionally, a 2019 report revealed that over 32,000 deaths in the country were linked to air pollution.

💡 How can we mitigate?
To mitigate the impact of air pollution, individuals can take several measures, such as :
- Wearing protective gear, and reducing exposure during peak pollution periods.
- Stricter emission standards for vehicles and industries, promoting the use of cleaner energy sources.
- Implementing effective air quality monitoring systems.

On November 7, 2024, the Rapid Asia team attended the closeout and reflection workshop for Plan International's Fostering Accountability in Recruitment for Fishery Workers (FAIR Fish) project, which is dedicated to reducing forced labor and human trafficking risks for migrant workers in Thailand’s seafood processing sector.

This insightful workshop brought together key stakeholders, including beneficiaries like Thai Union, SME employers, the Labour Development Trade Association, the Thai Tuna Industry Association, the Proud Association, and more. Khun Jin, the Project Director from Plan International Thailand, along with representatives from Plan International USA, led a meaningful discussion on the project’s achievements, lessons learned, and sustainability strategies. Proud Association representatives also shared their hands-on experience in training migrant workers using project tools, such as a mobile app and online course.

During the workshop, the Rapid Asia team had the chance to contribute ideas based on our past and current collaborations with Plan International, including our ongoing project with FAIR Fish. We’re looking forward to sharing more updates on this important work in the coming year!
