When is the best time to visit Chiang Mai

The most popular time to visit Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand is the high season which takes place from October to February. Thailand's second largest city has over 2 million visitors a year and 25% of them will visit during these months.

Chiang Mai has so much to offer that any time is a good time to visit. From March until April it is the hottest time of year. If you want to cool off during these months there is a huge water festival that takes place during the middle of April.

Biggest Festivals & Holidays in Chiang Mai

Songkran

The largest festival that takes place in Chiang Mai is called the Songkran. It is basically a huge water fight that takes place all across the city and begins the second week of April and lasts for 3 to 5 days. The main events take place in the old city which is surrounded by a 700-year-old active moat. During the Songkran festival, you will find locals and tourist with buckets of water, water bombs, and water guns. It is impossible to escape being drenched in water but is also one of the most fun festivals in the world.

If taking part in one of the world's largest water fights is not your thing, then you should avoid traveling to Chiang Mai during this period of time.

Loy Krathong

Loykrathong is better known by tourists and visitors as the festival of lights and is a three-day event that takes place in November. It is extremely popular so if you are thinking about going you need to book accommodation in advance. It is one of the most beautiful sights you will see in your lifetime as people gather from across the city to release flame fed lanterns into the sky at night.

During the Loy Krathong festival, you will find many different activities such as parades, bands, and locals in traditional dress. The streets get packed so if you want to get a great view from one of the many bars, make sure to get there early to secure your spot.

Flower Parade & Carnival

The Flower Parade takes place on the first weekend of February. It is a two-day event that lasts all day. It is not as popular as the above two events so if you like uncrowded spaces then this would be the better event to attend. The Northern Thais are extremely talented to creating beautiful follower arrangements and this festival gives them a chance to show off their skills to the fullest. A contest takes place judging the most spectacular flowers, orchid, displays along with float.
Weather

Depending on the type of weather you enjoy the most may determine when you visit Chaing Mai. If you like it hot and dry March through to April are the best months. The rainy season starts around May but you will generally find that the showers only last an hour or two maximum before the sun is back out. If you love nature, it is a great time to go as the rain brings out ll of the lush green plant of the surrounding mountains.

During September the rainy season is in full force but it is still hot. Even during this month, you will find plenty of days where the sun shines. If you do not like it roasting hot, this is the best time to visit.

During October until January there is not as much rain and the temperature is cooler. If you are thinking about traveling during the night, it would be advisable to take a jacket with you.

How To Live In Chiang Mai On 100 Thai Baht Per Day

Traveling to Thailand has become a lot more expensive than it used to be a decade ago. It is mainly due to the currency strengthening and local Thais realizing that they can get more from the tourists. It is still, however, a lot cheaper than living in Europe or America but if you get carried away as many tourists do in the first week, you can find that your daily budget dramatically dropped. In this article, we will go through how to love in Chiang Mai on 100THB per day if ever you get in a dire situation and need to live a cheaply as possible.

Chiang Mai is one of the cheapest places to live in Thailand and the prices are far less than the south. Still living on only 100THB is a tough task for anyone so below we go through the different options available.

Volunteer Work

There are hundreds of jobs involving volunteer work in Chiang Mai and as well giving something back, it will also help you survive. Most places will provide you with 3 meals a day and accommodation. It means that you will have no outgoing costs and will be able to either save the 100thb or save it so you can carry on your travels in the future.

Accommodation

Accommodation costs are the largest outgoing costs and even living in dormitories you will find it very difficult to find a hostel that charges less than 100THB per day. If you plan on staying long term and have the capital, to begin with, you can either buy a campervan or camping equipment. By cutting out the costs of accommodation is the only way you will be able to get by living in Chiang Mai on such a tight budget.

Trade Your Skills

If you have skills set that you are good at, trading your skills is a fantastic way of saving yourself a fortune. I have done it myself by creating a website for a new guest house that opened and in return they gave me one month's accommodation in return. There are many different skills that the Thais or tourists will either pay for such as haircuts, yoga, personal training etc.

CouchSurfing

Couch surfing has taken the whole world by storm over the last few years and you can now find accommodation almost anywhere in the world. Homeowners do not charge a penny for you to stay with them and as discussed earlier, it is that cost which is the largest. With zero accommodation costs and living or street food or picking your own, you can easily live on 100THB per day in Chiang Mai.

If you do decide to try out Couch surfing make sure you follow safety protocols such as reading the reviews and referrals from people who have stayed there before. It can be a good idea to meet the owner for a coffee or meeting place first to see if you get along before moving in.

Home Swapping

If you own your own home or rent a place on a permanent basis another great option is home swapping. There are lots of choices online but make sure you fully check out the people staying as you do not want your home being destroyed by strangers.

You should make a real return during the busy tourist season. You will need to set some money aside during the good months to cover your costs during the low season.

Remember you are not on holiday, this is a real business and needs to be taken as seriously as it would in your home country.

To set up a business legally you will need to find a business partner. Many legal practices can act like your Thai partner, Make sure you carry out extensive research on each one before going ahead. One of the best options is to use a Thai partner that you trust completely. Some male foreigners marry women born in Thailand and use them as their business partner. That works well as long as the relationship is strong and can survive loved ones working together. Many farangs have lost their businesses once their marriage broke up.
